I am on the cusp of buying a mint 1985 Boston Whaler 27FC. The boat is in mint condition and has new twin diesel Yanmar inboards with 300 HP each. The engines are 2 years old with only about 150 hours on them, likewise she had her fuel tanks, struts, shafts and props replaced with the engines.

I know Whalers are unsinkable, but what about the general seaworthieness of this boat. I like her layout and etc, however I ask questions about her ride. Does the boat run well in pretty tough conditions. I intend to fish the boat both offshore and inshore, but its the earlier that I worry about. There seems to be little information on this boat, so I come ask the Whaler lovers. Please advise.

That would be the ultimate Whaler in my eyes. You are talking about $60k in upgrades, my friend did the same to his 33' Wellcraft 4 years ago with the 300 Yanmars. That boat runs about 30mph now and weighs 25k. That 27 should haul.

Yes the boat does haul. It cruises at 28 knots....I think she's overpowered by about 150 HP. Also your guess about hte upgrade was correct. The guy showed me a bill for 58K. I want feedback though on the boats performance in adverse seaconditions. She is high quality and in great shape. She has great electronics etc. What are your oppinions.

The 27-foot Whaler hull is a derivative of all the other classic Dougherty hulls used in Whalers of that era from 18-foot to 25-foot. It's just bigger, and better!
