Two months back I almost inked this deal:
2003 170 Montauk 90hp elpt 4 stroke merc. swing tongue carpeted side rail galvinized trailer, Factory swim platform, Factory fishing package, dealer installed dual battery system, pate 24 gal tank, iCom m45, Garmin gpsmap 168i, kenwood am/fm/cd w/ remote, Shakespere galaxy antenna, anchor rode and chain ,and the proverbial "coast gauard package" for a hair under $26,000.00 delivered from CA. to NV. On my wife's instructions I was to take delivery no earlier than Jan 1. In the mean time I found a 1979 Montauk with an 80hp merc and plenty-o-goodies for $6,000.00. I bought my first boat (the 79 Montauk) a few months back and have absolutly no regrets going used vs new and saving the 20k and the interest on 20k.

I bought my 170 2 weeks ago. Mine came with the 90 hp 4-stroke Merc, fishing package (72 qt cooler w/ cushion, 4 rod holders on front of console w/ backrest, tackle drawers in console, Richie compass), bow cushion, USGS package (4 pfd, 1 throw cushion, flare kit, fire extinguisher, nice bag), dock lines, bumpers, EZ Loader trailer.

Out the door with tax and license was $21,575.

I have added a Standard Horizon Intrepid LE VHF w/ 8' antenna, Garmin 76S GPS, Garmin 160 Blue fishfinder, 4 Rail mount rod holders, Mills mooring cover, anchor rode and chain. All for about $2,000.

Hope that helps,

John

Great price especially since they had to deliver the boat to California. What is the sales tax in California? What did the shipping cost from Florida?

The boat I purchased was already at the dealer and they had a $20,000 price tag on it. I told the dealer I had cash and wanted the boat, could he move on the price. He said that was the lowest he could go. I called the No. Cal whaler dealer and their price was $4k more (came with a bimini), so I asked my dealer to throw something in and I would take it. He threw in the bow cushion.

The sales tax in my county is 7.25% + $125 for registration came to $21,575 out the door.

The dealer never disclosed the shipping and I never asked.

It seemed like a pretty good deal so I wrote him a check, went back a week later for a sea trial and took the boat home.

LilJohn, Did it come with a bimini top?

My boat did not come with a bimini. I ordered the mooring cover from Mills and it arrived yesterday. I am very impressed with the quality so I will be ordering the bimini from them next month. Mills wants $743 for the top with matching boot and full stainless hardware. Shipping will be another $100 to So CA. When it is all said and done (like that is possible), I will have about $25,000 in the complete setup.

Whaler's advertisement in the November 2002 issue of BOATING magazine (page 47) shows the 170-MONTAUK base price as $17,400.

This price includes base boat, motor, and trailer. It does not include options, freight, or dealer prep.

This compares to the boat show price at introduction in February of $17,655. Apparently the price has been reduced about $255.

For reference:

130-Sport $9,200
150-Sport $12,350
170-Montauk $17,400

My 170 cost $18,995 base price on 9/20/02, from the Outboard Motor Shop in Alameda, CA.

After adding the 4s 90hp upgrade, the boat, motor and trailer package cost me $20,330.

After all of the other options (Mills bimini, swim ladder, dual batteries, trailer swing tongue, 24gal Pate tank, spare tire & mount, electronics installed, VHF antenna & mount, trailer side bunks) I paid the dealer $25,700 grand total, including 8.25% tax.

I also added about $2k worth of electronics (VHF, sonar and chartplotter/gps).

I didn't have any negotiating room on the base price, since the dealer claimed rapid-fire turnover of the Montauk 170s. He said the shipping fee was added to the published base price of $17,655.

When I set out to buy a new boat, I was expecting to pick up a used 17 for ~$10k. Then I read the raves about the 170, and thought I'd be looking at ~$17k. Little did I realize I would add another $12k to that figure before I'd be done. And I still have about another $1,800 before I'm really done setting up, plus a kicker if I decide to do that.

Funny how that all happens so quickly, isn't it?
