I have noticed many of the older Whalers were bottom painted in an aqua blue with a red strip at the water line. It seemed as though that was a traditional bottom painting for Whalers. Is this so, and was this type look done only by Whaler Dealers, or did some come from the factory that way?

Being a blue interior in the older ones, blue bottom paint was the choice. Red boot stripes were VERY common back then and are still put on classics. Actually boot stripes are making a comeback, whaler offers it as an option now. My 64 had blue paint and a red stripe and my Revenge had black with red. Problem with whalers is that hull is a biotch to bootstripe. The tape does not like to stick in the corners. If you do not do it just right it looks stupid or will shortly fall off. I am still debating doing my Montauk.

I bottom painted my Montauk with blue paint and a 3/4" red boot stripe. It looks great, especially with the blue Mills canvas flying. It was a real pain to mark and tape off for the paint, but I used a 1/2" fine line tape for the waterline, then simply aligned the bootstripe to that after the bottom paint job was done. It's held up well after a year in the water.

Foamfilled,

No, the bottom paint and boot stripes you have seen did not come from the factory. Bottom paint was always owner, boat yard or dealer installed. The color combination you describe was and is very popular on many types of boats.
