It's sad, but I'm going to have to sell my 1979 17' Newport soon- we've simply outgrown it. I'm fishing around for what a respectable asking price would be, so here's a little background on it's condition:
- 1979 Newport, 80 hp Mercury-original
- Garaged since new, gelcoat perfect.
- Completely rewired last month. EVERY inch of wire replaced, new fuse block with spares
- Tanks refurbished and repainted
- Custom mahogony bench/storage aft
- Walk-around console.
- All teak in perfect condition
- Engine recently worked on and tuned.
- All chrome shiny, no noticable pitting

I know a picture is worth a thousand words, but I don't have a digital camara yet. Anyway, I was thinking somewhere in the $12-$13,000 range. Even though the engine is original, it's very strong and reliable. I cross the Catalina channel often with confidence.
Any thoughts? Am I out of my mind?
Thanks!

People are going to be very reluctant to tell you something you don't want to hear, Rockford.

A Newport with a 23 year old engine is going to have to be very very nice to bring over $8K in most places.

Maybe the west coast is different.

Good luck.

Rockford,

I have to agree with JB...
I live on the West Coast.. The Newport is a very nice boat and highly sought after. BUT here is the BUTT, I think it would bring around $9,500.00 on todays' market. (always the right buyer)
Of course you might find a buyer that is willing to pay more, so you never know. You can always come down on price.

And yes, you are out of your mind, just like the rest of us Whaler Lovers!!!!! :-))

Regards

JB- How many 17' Newports have you really seen on the market?? The boat as described is mint. Moreover, the engine has been serviced plus is reliable. Sounds like a flame to me. 12k to 13k is a perfectly reasonable "ask" for the CA market. .03 David

Hi, David.

The man asked for an opinion. I gave him one.

Yours seems different.

No flame, no counter flame. Okay?

This is my opinion! I think that even a brand new newport that has been sitting in a stogage shed and never run would be in the 13 grand range. Even in mint condition the newport is still a 23 year old boat, I would $7,800 to $9,000 is where it would sit. Just for my info. how much did you pay orginally?

I agree with JB. There was a brand new, never wet 1985 17 Supersport with trailer and no engine on E-bay and he could not fetch $7k. Rockland's engine is worth about $1k if lucky so max on the hull is $6-8k if really mint. You can always ask what you feel is what it is worth. You may even find someone who will pay $12k. Hell there was a guy that had a mint 21 Outrage and he wanted $40k for the hull, he'll never get it but it probably made him feel good about all the time and money he spent on it.

David...there are plenty of Newports for sale, some are nicer than others. from your last few comments on others people's boats for sale on this forum......I would be careful about who you call a spammer. Jb at least did not call the guy "high"

I purchased my 1989 Newport last year. It was in great condition and had a 1992 90hp evinrude. I purchased it for about $6000...the 12k figure seems a bit high to me...

Good luck...

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, the boat is in "mint" condition. There are scratches on the red rub rail and a couple near the bow on the hull. I guess the way I was looking at it was that this 23 year old hull is better made, will last longer, has better sea-keeping ablity, etc. than most, if not any brand new boat in its' class (maybe with the exception of Whaler itself).
True, the engine is not worth much, but take $12K to the boat show and see what you get. I'd just as soon dump the engine overboard and install oarlocks than put down $20K plus for some new, what I call, "Boat Show" piece of crap. They may be OK for calm days on lake and rivers- definately not open ocean boats.
By the way, the boat, trailer, and engine was $8,500.00 in 1979. Should that matter any? How much were classic cars originally?
I'm in no rush to sell, it won't happen in at least a year from now. I have a couple of options in mind for replacement: 24' Skipjack Flybridge, 28' Bertram, 31' Bertram.
I appreciate everyone's opinion.
Thanks.

I paid $6K for mine last year. Its an 87 with a 70 hp on it, all in very good shape. It had nice canvas and a few extras, but 12k? Good luck.

You if you can get what you paid for it, you are ahead of the game. The biggest difference between a newport and a 65 mustang is the demand and that no one really collects boats. I saw an orginal woodden grady white, first year made, Mint, Orginal and they could not get half of $12,000. The only boat that is a collectable is the 31 bertram which people are selling their children to get, a 1969 beat 31 bertram gets bokoo dollars, people gut them and through in yanmar diesels. If you do sell the newport get the bertram, my 2 cents!
