Should have listened to the advice I received on this site. I purchased a 97 Montauk w/ a 99 90 hp ficht engine, with only 75 hours. Did some homework and felt that the 90's were relatively trouble free. Also had the boat thoroughly checked out before buying. Against lots of advice on this site, I bought the boat. I used it for about a year, taking great care of it, and recently sold it when I upgraded to a 24' Outrage. The engine had a total of 130 hours. The new owner had the boat only 3 weeks and the engine had a major meltdown, requiring a new short block. He decided to replace the entire engine. Feeling pretty lousy about what happened, I helped pay for part of the engine replacement. Just wanted to update everyone on this site so you can be aware of my situation and possibly avoid the same results. I've seen some new fichts for sale on Ebay and people need to be aware of their limitations, even though they are new.

As I understand it, Steve, it is the name of the German company that developed the technology, then sold it to OMC.Some folk, probably including Scotts and definitely including my Son-in Law (who knew better than the old man) may well see it as a new epithet. Red sky at night. . . JB |

Ficht does not translate to English. But why translate? A simple vowel change will suffice! |

scotts152001You should be praised for having the integrity to pay for part of the repair cost for the engine AFTER you sold the boat. I salute you! It's a shame that the engine manufacturers don't have a conscience. |

We have a 01 90 hp ficht on our montauk and have run it since brand new with no trouble. I put over 50 hours in one week on on it this summer in the keys, and love the motor. I know people that have destroyed yamahas, mercs and johnsons with few hours on them. On any thing that has moving parts that you buy used that is the nature of the beast. I sold my old montauk to a friend, and the second time he took the boat out he blew the 90 yamaha up. I gave him 2000 dollars back on the boat, even though the motor checked out fine when he bought the boat. He also had backed the boat of a mud flat that morning the engine blew, so you never know who is to blame on the yamaha. The ficht ram motor we have so far has cost 0 dollars for repair, runs great, does not smoke, burns 0 gas, and will run circles around a 90 yamaha as far as power and speed are concerned. I have had both motors to compare them to. |

At our work camp we have a ficht that is used every day from the end of May until late Sept. Other than some minor engineering flaws and one major problem(it was sunk in fresh water)the motor has preformed wonderfully. The rest of the year it is stored out in the weather of S.E. Alaska. It has done this for 2 1/2 years and has maybe 1000 hard hours on it and it starts great and gets gas mileage. But this is just one experience... |
