After reading scotts152001's topic about the failure on the 90 hp version, I'm wondering what the story is on these motors. One of the boats I've had my eye on has been repowered with a 2000 150 hp Ficht. Where can I learn more?

CSG, check out floridasportsman.com or thehulltruth.com. Personally, I would be afraid of a 2000. In 2001 the motors were pretty much perfected, and the new 2003's have gained the confidence of many first class boat companies (hence they are factory rigged with FICHT motors). When a FICHT is running right, in my opinion it is the best motor on the planet. |

Majority of issues are very early on. Any Ficht with a couple hundred hours is just as prone to failure as a Yamaha or Mercury. When looking used I would not hesitate to buy a ficht because you will probably get enough discount to replace or repair a powerhead with an updated model. If the deal is right, do it. |

Bigshot I disagree somewhat. If the FICHT was not 2000 or newer, I would not go anywhere near it. The problem with those motors wasn't really the powerheads as much as it was the computers telling the powerheads what to do. The FICHT/Opit's are very complicated motors, but now that the mechanics are catching up with the technology things are smoothing out.But like Bigshot alludes to, buying any used motor without a warranty is a crapshoot. |

A good web reference for Ficht stuff is www.boatsetup.com . You'll find a forum there with much ficht talk. Bottom line seems to be, make sure the motor is propped so as to run at the very high limit of the rpm range, or -slightly- over, as there is over-rev protection. Bog a ficht, and it'll die quickly.-JV |

Thaks for the links. This motor in on a classic Outrage 18 (which is probably a little more boat than I want anyway) but if it's still around later this month, I want to look at it. Forewarned is forearmed. |
