I got to do some test and tune on sunday,34mph gps with a 70hp johnson.I had a full 23 gallons of gas and about a 400 lb load.It planed quickly and handled fine.I did'nt really get a chance to fine tune the jackplate or trim angle much,so i think i can get a few more mph out of her.Cost of swap about $1200.00,minus the $500.00 i got for the old engine and jetdrive,so total cost was $700.00.I guess i had about 40-60 hours in the swap.Anybody interested in pics or specifics, just email me directly. |

34 mph! I was only getting 32 with that engine on my Minot! Bob, that is excellent news! I will talk with you later because I want to find out how the outboard ran! I also want to know how the heck you stayed warm because Saturday and Sunday didn't get above 32 degrees. - ron |

Great job on the project! love to see people think outside the box. you must have a lot of storage space now. great job. |

Ron it was like 50 down at dads, and i caught two rockfish while i was out messin around, both were shorties, but hey the first official trip out and i got fish, not too bad.I think i will put a doel fin on the motor, mainly to limit the bow rise, which is about the same as dads 13. |

Good Job, I am glad you were not discouraged by anyone. Looks great and now you have alot of storage room in the transom. |

I am glad no one discouraged you but I think you need to raise the engine up a bit for even better/best performance When the engine is down, where is the cavitation plate? Unlike a transom mounted outboard a motor on a bracket must have the cavitation plate higher than the bottom of the hull. There is a formula for this, I will find it a post it. |

Beautiful job! It would be nice if you wrote an article describing the whole project in detail so Jim can publish it on this site. |

What kind of RPMs are you getting? What size prop? Ithink you need to jack it up a couple inches....maybe more untill it starts to blow out, etc. PS that is a darn clean 1975 Johnny you got there. |

Well at the risk of sounding like a lil kid at xmas."i dunno"i was looking at the gps and smiling most of the time, now that i think about it.I hope i was'nt overrevving it.It did'nt sound funny, and as far as the prop goes,im not sure of that either. The good condition can be attributed to whaleron's excellant care and maintence.HEY RON let me know when your gonna sell that nice shiny new 90.I'm sure i have some fine tuning to do to it,but that will have to wait till it warms up a lil.As far as the rigidity goes, not a creak, rattle,or any funny sounds. It's as dry in the bilge as the first few times i took it out.Actually, its drier than when it was a jet.lol |

Very Nice! Do you know how much lighter (or heaver) the new set up is? Also a picture of the engine compartment (now a big beer cooler?) would be cool to see... Pete |

Good clean project. That old 70 looks to be a commercial model and pretty clean to boot. Steve |

Bob, Great, innovative project and really well executed. That hull looks mint as well. No doubt we'll see the prices on used Rages starting to climb once folks get a look at your conversion. |

Bob had sent me those photos about a month ago. The boat looks great. I'm really glad he pulled it together in the face of all the absurd criticism he got from when he first proposed the project. By the way, that motor is a standard 1975 Johnson 70, one of the most popular and durable motors of all time. I hope it serves Bob well. |

Bob, I meant to ask you what the motor was "taching" at 34 mph. I never had a tach on it so I never did know what it was turning at 32mph. I got that motor in 1980 with 40 hours on it and it was always good to me. That motor starts better than my new 90! Remember, wax the motor every 2nd time out like I always did....You take care of my baby...sniff sniff. Now we gotta start thinking about fishing the Chincoteague humps in the spring! - ron |

Bob, I have a reminder for you. About 6 months before you picked up that motor, I put a brand new tilt tube in it. That is the tube that the steering cable attaches to. It wasn't stainless steel so make sure you keep it well greased. - ron |

Ron,i was so happy just to get out and play a little,i did'nt really take note of the tach,i will next time.I think the extra mph came from the setback bracket,i'm told you can pick up like 5mph per 6" of setback(i think)because at 1200 lbs(dry weight)the boat is a pig,now i realize hull design has alot to do with it,but i doubt that the rage hull is anymore efficient than a classic hull.So next spring i will get out and iron any bugs out. There is a young guy down in Fl converting his Rage over too,so we may get some different styles to look at soon.I have gotten alot of inquiery's about it and alot of guy's say they want to do the same thing.Sounds like maybe my Rage's value might have gone up because of my swap??? |
