Four years ago, I bought my 1st whaler. It is a 1975 model and it came equiped with a 1991 Johnson 60hp on the back. I was a little skeptical about the setup when I purchased the boat but at the time I was living in New Orleans and my trips mostly consisted of fishing on shallow and calm waters of coastal Louisana. The boat tops out at about 40MPH but it crusies nicely at 30MPH 3/4 throttle/4000 RPM's. At 3/4 throttle your still flying but you aren't putting undue stress on the engine which I find comforting. I have since moved to the Northeast where the conditions are less than ideal for so much HP and engine weight. In any event, I've seen other 13's with 48HP and 50HP engines but I haven't seen another with a 60PH and I'm wondering if anyone in this forum has had a similar experience as myself.

If all you're getting is 40 mph, something is wrong! You should be getting closer to 50.

My 13' GLS had a 50hp Yamaha. Although many people will criticize overpowering, the 13' hull can only go up to a certain speed before it starts to "dance." For me that speed was about 40mph. The kid I sold it to gets it up to about 46mph (weight distributed differently).

If the transom does not sit too low, the 60 will help the boat plane when you get four people, a heavy cooler, etc. into the boat.

There is one on E_Bay right now with a 60. I also saw one in Barbados with a 60 and a guy by me has a supersport with a 60hp 3 cyl Johnson. I have been on a 15 with a 115 and have seen a montauk with a 175 Merc on it. i owned a 17 with a 115. Basically....overpowering is fine if not illegal where you live. It will void the warranty and insurance will be more expensive. It does make the engine work less at higher speeds. Thing is that Hp is what ruins transoms, not weight. That 60 will do harm faster than a 40 will which may be 20 years or 200.

As I've repeated often on this site, I used to own a 13'SS with a '94 Merc Trim 'n Tilt. Verified twice with the ol' GPS (Standard Horizons - ex-military, solid stuff) a clean 48 mph.

At some point there must be a tradeoff between engine size, weight, positioning, wave issues, etc. Diminishing returns, after reading this website for a while leads me to believe that I got it right
