Hi All,

I'm looking at a 1990 Outrage that I thought was an 18, but now I'm not really so sure. The owner says it is an Outrage 17 (that's what is says on the hull), and that he heard that this model was only built for a couple of years. It definitely has the straight shear and deeper 'V' associated with the '81-'90 Outrages. It has the large integral fuel tank. However, the transom is notched for only a single outboard with a splash well similar to the 13-17's of that genre. Also, the boat has a taller console than the standard 18's I have seen. There is no teak in the boat. The foredeck has the molded combings on the inside of the gun'ls, and the hull is definitely an Outrage. Looking at the pictures, the boat seems to be completely stock. Maybe it's a CPD product?

Anyone have any idea what this boat might be?

After I make her mine, I will send Jim some pics, as it is definitely a different Whaler.

The boat you are describing was made from 1990 to 1995. It is an Outrage 17. Later know as the 17' Outrage I. The 17' Outrage II was made from 1996 to 1999, this was a much different boat from the 17' Outrage I.

Lenth 17' 3", Beam 6' 8", Draft 10", Weight 1020, Built in Fuel Tank 34 Gallons.

These are very nice boats. They do not have any Teak and yes, the Console is taller then earlier Outrages and has a Locking Electronics Box on top of the console. The boat also has rear Quarter seats on each side of the splashwell and in front of the splashwell there is a covered storage bin which can be used for a livewell or storage.

Let us know when you get it. I am always interested in seeing photos...

Whalersman,

Thanks for the reply! Any idea what the max HP is on this boat? Also, any idea on capacities? How does the value of this model compare with the 18's? Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

I have the 1993 catalog sitting right in front of me....

The boat is rated for Max HP of 120... I think a V4 115 HP would be great for this boat... Either 2 Stroke or 4 Stroke, your preference.. Even a 90 or 100 HP may be great if you aren't a Speed Demon..

Max Person Capacity = 6
Max Weight Capacity = 1365 lbs.
Swamped Capacity = 1850 lbs.
Engine Shaft Length = 20"

When are you picking the boat up???
Keep us up to date.....

whalersailer,

Usually when someone posts a "what is this" question it has do with an “odd ball” Whaler model like the Mischief, GTX or maybe even a Menemsha. But the Outrage 17 was built for six years as Joe points out and is very closely related to its siblings. In the time you have been with us on the FORUM there have been at least two or three good discussions of this boat.

The Outrage 17 is a very nice boat. It is very much like a 90% scale version of the Outrage 18 but with the differences noted by Joe above. There were some different variations of it though.

The first Outrage 17's had a stern deck that spanned the full width of the boat with a straight across bullhead on the face of it. There were two storage lockers in this stern deck for a battery and an oil tank. Because the stern deck consumed so much space, in 1992 or so they changed that configuration to allow the stern quarter seats.

The original boat only had a fuel capacity of 29 or 30 gallons and came standard with a reversible pilot seat with an upholstered fiberglass seat back and white legs.

There are at least two photos of the Outrage 17 in the Cetacea section. The Outrage 17 is also in the Reference section under the Specifications, 9 - 22 foot hulls.

Use the site search engine ( http://continuouswave.com/htdig/ ) to look up numerous threads of discussion about the Outrage 17.

Hi Tom,

I apologize for taking the easy way out and posting my question. Thanks for the information and link to the search engine. I will complete my homework before asking anymore questions about this boat.

Let me know if you need a nice trailer for it.
I have a shoreline trailer that was custom made for an outrage 17 .

I have an 1990 outrage 19. I recently spoke to a fellow who worked for Boston Whaler during that era. He informed me that they changed the name of the 18 to 19 because they introduced the new 17 Outrage. I would be very interested in seeing your boat.

By your description we would have the same console, and yours as well as mine has no teak.

Take care, cc

Thanks for all the responses guys! Any idea of a ball park on what this thing is worth? Boat looks like it is in decent shape (probrably 6-7/10). There is a single axle galvanized trailer under it. The motor is a '90 'Rude 120 VRO with t/t. I'm waiting for the guy to get back to me with the compression numbers, but for the sake of this argument let's assume they check out. Boat has a fishfinder and a VHF. No cover or any canvas.

What do you all think?

p.s. I am purposely not putting down the purchase price so as not to bias any thoughts on the value of the package.

whalersailer,

Used boat prices are very region dependent. You are in the mid west and I don't know that market. Also, you say the boat is a 6 or 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. That doesn't really mean much to me. A photo does. But given all that you have said, I would speculate that a boat like that in your area would have an asking price of $11,000 and it could be bought for $10,000

Thanks Tom. That's about what I figured.

I just posted this boat on the marketplace. This looks like a pretty decent boat, but the logistics of getting it were just too much to overcome right now. Hopefully someone else can pick her up.
