Does anyone know at what pressure gas stops evaporating? Basically I've noticed that when I store gas in a vented can, if I move the gas or let it sit that it will give off gasses (like shaking a carbonated drink). If I leave the vent closed on the tank it puffs up like a baloon so I store the tanks with the vent open. My question is, at what pressure will it stop releasing gasses? Is it enough pressure to pop a plastic tank? I've never stored the tanks with the vent closed for long periods.

weekendwarrior - a direct answer to your question is impossible as the vaporization of gasoline in a closed tank depends on the temperature of the fluid, the heat energy transferred into the tank and the vapor pressure of the fluid. That is, if your tank is setting on a cake of ice, the gasoline will not vaporize - whereas, if your tank is setting out in the sun on a nice sunny day, vaporization will occur and will build up pressure.

The tanks are built to USCG specifications, however I have not researched what their internal rupture pressure specs are. ----- Jerry/Idaho
