A very poor showing of Boston Whalers at the Atlanta Boat Show today. The local dealer TAL Marine had five on display. It looked like they were concentrating on their Formula line (the kind of flashy boat the yupsters want to be seen in on Lake Lanier). It almost seemed like they were getting out of the Whaler line. No Whaler Reps on hand today.

They had a 2002 Montauk on display. She was the old model and can be yours for $201 per month (no price listed). She had the red hull stripe and red bimini. I am partial to the black stripe and navy bimini. It goes so nice with my jet black merc.

I saw a Montauk look alike called a Sailfish(I think) for $15,700. I did not appreciate how bad the quality was until I peered into one of the lockers and saw what looked like 'Great Stuff", what you buy at Home Depot for insulating.

Edgewater had a nice display. The dealer was located in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. We went aboard an Edgewater 265 with twin 250 Yams for $109,000. Beautiful boat and nice little cabin.

The Scouts didn't look bad. They are offered in different colors. I talked to the rep. He said their only plant is in Summerville, SC (near Charleston) and that they recently added 100,000 square feet. Scout is lined up with Yamaha. 'The Outboard Shop' in Charleston, SC that used to sell Whalers with Yamahas finally dropped the Whaler line and only sell Scouts. He felt like Whaler was resting on the laurels of their past.

My five year old daughter was highly disappointed that there were no bumper boats or sea lion show. To top to that Ginger from Gilligan's Island nor Ellie May from the Beverly Hill Billies were featured. Boy has show has gone downhill.

About Tal Marine...

GAwhale, you said it well. Boston Whaler is their second priority. I'm not knocking the business itself, (they have an incredible Formula department) but if it's a knowledgeable BW service department your looking for, you might be better off just posting your questions here.

too bad about the showing at the ATL Boat Show. The last time I went (read: 1998) it was incredible! There was an antique boat gallery that was just amazing. Old Lymans, and ChrisCraft runabouts complete with original motors. It was great. I guess this year's showing reflects the economic hit Atlanta is taking

Hey, what about that skiing squirrel? I heard somewhere they stapled his feet to the skis. Tough on the tootsies.

I went on saturday night. In my opinion, Whaler has never put much effort into Atlanta or the boat show, and this year was no different.

I thought it was interesting to see some new McKee Craft boats. I have not seen any for a long time. I didn't even know they still made them. Based on the brochure, it appears that they are even expanding their line to some larger boats.

On the plus side, I liked the new location for the show and the proximity of the parking to the show as compared with years past.

The old wooden boats and outboards on display were excellent. They were in the lobby. You didn't even have to pay to see those.

There was a restored 1968 SeeDoo on display along with the new ones. It was canary yellow with a black vinyl seat and wood grain sticker on the dash. It didn't look anything like the speed demons built today.

Whaler generally has never made any major showing in Atlanta, since Atlanta is primarily a lake type of marketplace dominated by MarineMax with Searay and the host of ski boats.ie Malibu. Although interestingly, this year there were numerous offshore boats, edgewatercontender, pursuit, fountain, mckeecraft and others that have not exhibited here. Although Tal did not show many Whalers, neither did Marinemax before them or Boating Atlanta before them.
