I have been looking for a kicker for my newtauk for a while, pricing things online, checking various publications for who has the best price. Once I decided what I wanted, a 4-5hp merc, I knew how much Ed's and Iboats were selling them for and how much they were being sold for in The Salty Dog, I didn't think I'd be able to get close to those prices in my area, especially since my local dealer is a small mom and pop kind of place. My intention was to purchase the engine through them but wanted to do my homework before they gave me a price. Well, I stopped in Friday on my way home from work and talked to them about what I was looking for. They wrote me out quotes for all 4 outboards, the 2 and 4 strokes, 4 and 5hps. Each one was within $15 of the other places and if I'm not mistaken(the quotes are out in the car and it's too cold to get them!), may have been a few dollars cheaper! Yes, I will have to pay tax on it but I would have to pay shipping for the others, so I guess it was a wash. My point is, when you are looking for an engine, don't forget your local dealer, you just might be pleasently surprised. I know I was!

Dave - You have a good dealer there, one who is now aware that his competition, and long term business survival, is not local, but national, via the web and UPS. He obviously knows the pricing at the national market level, which any of us can now access, and is responding with a good business model. He certainly deserves your business. Remember, your example involves a low HP engine, widely available in catalogs, easy to ship, and a size which is easily installed on any boat from the trunk of a car with no need for skilled installation or weight handling equipment. All of this size engines are readily available nowadays in the catalogs or internet. Any Dealer who doesn't sell at national catalog/internet prices in this size range (3 to 30HP) would be foolish. The real test would be his selling price on a 225. |
