I have a 16'8'' Nauset and need to re-power. Is this hull the same as the Montauk as far as how big you can go? What is the best set up?

suzuki/Johnson 70hp 4 stroke is the best in my opinion and about 1/2 dozen others here who use it.

2 Strokes are still very viable choices. The 16 foot hulls work best with lighter weight motors. The 70 johnson/Suzuki 4s is 360 Lbs. If you intend to mount a kicker, then the whole setup quickly exceeds the 400 lb maximum load.

The 90 Johnson (Bombardier Produced) at 335 lbs. would be my first choice. The Johnson has more cylinders and cubic inches than the others in the class.

That said, the Yamaha 90 (261 lbs.) and Merc 90 (305 lbs.) are great motors also, but Yamaha has a spottier dealer network in Michigan.

What is your current power?

That is an error. 70 4 stroke is 338-342lbs if prop is weighed. Yamaha/merc 60 4 stroke is 240lbs or so and another great choice but I think the 70 has way better performance. If 2 stroke is desired, go with the yamha 70-90hp

You asked "What is the best setup"... I think Bigshot is on the right track with a good 4 stroker, but by far the Fisher Pierce 85 hp is the very best match... Weighing in at only 280 lbs (dry weight) it by far is the best power to weight ratio... It also is one sweet motor (Coventry Climax FWB)for trolling and skiing... Can idle all day at 700 RPM (1.2 mph) and then hit it up to 5800 RPM (35 mph)... It will idle (troll)45 minutes on a quart of gas too... If anyone knows of any 85's available please let me know as I want to put a pair of em on an outrage one day...

I have a 1969 hull and I repowered last year with a new 90hp Johnson. It is a great motor with plenty of power. I highly recommend this outboard motor!

It currently has a 70 Merc, 2 stroke. I think I want to stay with a 2 stroke for weight reasons. I'm looking at a 90 Merc if that will make the transition easier re: controls, trim etc.

I rehabed a 65 bear hull into a Nauset 2 years ago and put on a new 50HP 2 stroke Merc. I run it all day in the Chesapeake Bay by the Bridge Tunnel almost every weekend. It pushes the boat with 2 folks at 30 Kts (about 34 MPH) and burns about 7-8 gals of fuel if I run about 30-40 NM.While a 70 would have been my choice, the cost locally was about $1 K more for a 60 and about $1.5K more for the 70. The 50 was installed new w/ controls, power tilt/trim, fuel tanks and enough oil for the first season for $4K which was the limit of my ready cash. If cash is not a problem go for the 70HP. If yo need speed, and cash is not important, go for the 90HP.
