Were gonna check this one out -

15' 1983 Boston Whaler Sport
1996 60HP Johnson O/B
Trailer
$6900

I know it's not a helluva deal, but It's relatively nearby compared to the others, only an hour ride....
How's it sound? Do you guys think it suits my needs?
In case u didn't see my other posts, I will be fishing for Stripers, blues, fluke and tog and anything else that comes my way in Narragansett and Greenwich bay with a friend, also be cruising around to places like Newport and just need a bayworthy boat....of course I'm 14, my dad will follow me around wherever I go with the 24' Rinker.
Thanks for your help!:)

Although a boat is worth what someone is willing to pay for it, in my opinion that price is quite high. Good 15's with 1990's power can be found in the $5000-5500 range. Just be patient.

Asking price is just the seller's wish. Bring cash and offer what you think the boat is worth. It's winter, and you may be pleasantly surprised. All you have a stake is an hour long car ride.

Seamaster,
You have to watch out on all different levels. I bought mine for a helluva deal. You just have to look. No matter what size! price matters! where else can you buy a 17 whaler for a grand?/! POINT: there are some good deals out there, you just have to find them. It is worth finding something, put a little elbow-grease in it and some TLC, then sell it and make money on it.

You have the bug. Lord, you live in Warwick, so there's no rush to get out there; it's not even February! With this economy, I'm sure what boats you see won't be moving fast either. keysnole is right- take your time. You'll be so much more satisfied that way. Unless that 15 is Bristol, the price sounds high.

I know folks have kind of worked you into a 15 footer, but I trailer my Montauk, and find it easy and worth it for the rougher stuff. Who knows- what if you want to take a day trip into Buzzards Bay? It can get rough in there, and the 17 would be better for you. You can find a 17 for your budget. There are plenty in New England, you just need to find them. I also wouldn't base my decision on one boat being a little closer, unless you have wads of cash to throw around.

Good luck man!

Seamaster, that 15' hull is a wonderful boat. Having followed several of your posts, I believe it will be an excellent solution for your needs.

Regarding asking price, its just that: price that they're asking. Bring money, review the boat and offer what its worth to YOU. Market forces are not YOUR concern, only the seller's.

I looked at a 15' Striper model, seller asking something like $8500. That didnt deter me one bit. Upon reviewing the boat, noting issues and calculating worth to me, I offered $5000. We settled at $5750. Did I get a great deal? Perhaps not, but I did get the boat that I wanted.

For further reference and testimonial on that 15' hull, take a look at the thread titled "15' STRIPER" and good luck in your search.

SeaM - I live nearby in Ma. Check capecodtimesonline classisfied section. I regularly see similiar 17s (yr) for about that price.

SeaMaster -

I just bought my '89 15 GLS last summer from a guy who was asking $7K. The boat was in great shape, and has a '95 70 hp Evinrude on it.

We negotiated down to $5,300 as a final sale price...and that was in the middle of the summer.

I agree with other's opinions. Take your time. The weather / economy is in your favor right now.

Be prepared to make an offer.

Take into consideration the trailer and if the rig comes with canvas (mine did not). A mooring cover from Mills will run you approximately $650 - value an existing mooring cover at about half that.

$6K is not too much to pay for a rig in excellent shape that comes with canvas.

Read the excellent article on buying a classic from the reference section of this site.

Check the trailer for rust, the tires for wear/cracks and the hull for delamination and spiderweb cracks in the gelcoat. Pay close attention to the transom (for cracks).

Take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the process - and listen to your dad's advice on what he thinks.

Finally, remember that you don't have to buy right now. There are other boats out there, and there are plenty of motivated sellers...just wait until tax time. :)

If this boat is in good shape, his asking price is a good starting point - negotiate down from there.

Good luck.

Looking at 1989 Striper with 1989 60hp for $7500. Boat is pristine with bimini and cover, fishfinder, & other equipment. Little use, never seen salt water and pampered well maintained. Located in NC so price seems to be in-line maybe. Try negotiate and decide what boat is worth to you if good deal. They are getting more rare to find factory original and pristine shape boats.

I think an 1989 model just sold here for 8k and another for sale for 10k with 2000 year power.

Hope this may help? GOODLUCK
