I have an old (1957 or '58) Johnson Sea Horse 7.5 that my Dad bought new. I last ran it about a year ago and it ran like a top. I have two questions. Do these old motors have a "stream" to show that it is pumping water OK ? This one did not. Second, would it be OK to use it as a kicker on my 15' ? Is the transom strong enough ? I will be fishing in the bay a lot and it would be nice just to have it as insurance.

Florida,My 15 came with a 4 HP johnson kicker on the drivers side. Seeing as how it is a side console, personally I would have put it on the passenger side to offset weight, but the guy who has this boat before me did it. It is not bad, I can drop it down and slow troll with it rather than running my main engine, so that is nice. As for a stream, this one doesnt have it, its a 1976 and I couldnt for the life of me find a water hole anywhere, I have used it quite a few times and it hasnt burned up yet, looking at the manual I cant find one either, so I imagine there is not one. Florida15 & Phil,OMC outboards did not have a tell tale ("stream") until the early 1980's. |

Nope! The 9.9 & 15's got them when introduced in 1974 and the 35 when introduced in 1976. Most others did not convert until late 70's-early 80's. |

So without a stream, there is no way to tell if your motor is going to burn up before it actually does ? I guess you just change the impellor regularly and hope for the best ? |

Florida15,No, that not quite right. If the motor is curculating water, there will be water spraying out of the mid section exhaust port on the back of the motor, but there will not be a fine little steam coming out of the bottom side of the lower motor cover on OMC motors of that vinatge. |
