The Wm. J. Mills & Co. website has a photo of a 170 Montauk (post classic) with a forward shelter, sun top (not flying top!), windshield and side curtains. Take a look:

The canvas set appears quite nice. There is nothing like the Mills canvas in my experience. I have ordered it for all of my Whalers and have been completely satisfied.

Nobody is a bigger fans of Mills Co than I, but I'm somewhat disappointed in the looks of the 170 canvas, at least as shown.

I prefer the lower profile, longer in length, less boxy, 3 SS support configuration of the previous classic Forward Shelter designs, and don't like it mated to the Sun Top with those big side curtains. I prefer the Flying top look when used in conjunction with the Shelter and Windshield.

The Mills forward shelter on my Montauk is a 2 bow system, and my only complaint is that is is hard to get larger objects like a cooler out from under it. Perhaps the seemingly taller profile for the 170 is trying to address that. In terms of the longer side curtains, they will provide more rain and spray protection, but it looks like it would be difficult to fish with them deployed. Still, it's great to see Mills producing canvas sets for the new Whalers. Perhaps the Whaler folks, or at least the dealers, will rekindle the old relationship and make Mills sets an option on new boats.

Actually, my Mills set is a 3-bow system, but the forward bow lies flat on the deck to anchor the system down. The other two bows support the canvas.

FYI - I take delivery of new canvas for my Montauk ... forward shelter, fly top, the works ... within the hour. Can't wait!

My mooring cover for my 1971 Nauset just arrived from Mills 5 minutes ago by UPS. I took advantage of Mills overstock sale. Cover looks like its real good quality.

Jim,
Congrats on your new Mills set. Give me a call if you have any questions about how mine is installed, etc. If you want to come look at it before drilling any holes, we can arrange that too.

Andy, thanks. Yes, I have questions and I'll give you a call.

My question relates to mounting the wood cleats onto which the hinges for the shelter and the flytop attach. The wood cleats are about 1" x 1" x 8". They 'rest' on the shelf molded into the fiberglass side of the Montauk but are screwed horizontally into the side of the boat. While the cleats are a square 1" x 1", the molded fiberglass shelf does not seem to be square to the side of the boat. So if I were to screw the wood cleats into the side of the boat as designed, the wood cleats will be up and slightly off of the fiberglass shelf and at an angle to the shelf, unless I modify the wood cleats to better fit the fiberglass shelf / wall intersection.

Do people modify the wood cleats to better fit the shelf/wall corner?

I'm thinking that I will use starboard cleats instead of the wood ones, while I'm at it.

Jim, I will take a look at mine this weekend. My recollection is that they sit flush on the lip so the load is carried by the lip instead of the screws. I agree that the blocks could be shaped so all both the vertical and horizontal surfaces are touching the boat.

I took Jim Hooper (Hoop) down to my Montauk to take a look at the canvas set, and sure enough, the forward shelter does have 3 bows, with a fourth that lies flat on the deck. I stand corrected.

Jim, it was great to see you today. We are really looking forward to the NorCal Rendezvous.
