I found one that the hull seems in reasonable condition, but wood has been unprotected for some time, some pieces broken with some delamination, and the fore decking is missing. I con get it with a trailer for $1,500. I'm capable of restoring it, although I've not done gel coat work before. 1) is it worth $1,500? 2) what's a fully restored one worth? 3) are plans available for the console/decking? 4) any particular advise? |

Red Lightning, You don't mention an Engine for this boat. Many times the Engine will determine the worth of the boat / package. Also, a brand new Engine, or Engines, will be worth more then the boat. There are drawings available in the OEM section here: |

I have the same thing going on. My dads is a 1965. Hull is in "ok" condition, but I am beginging to restore it. I have been looking at the same questions as you are, Red. JAZZ ;) |

I'd be happy to pay $1500 for a dry 1964 hull with restorable console and bench. Bow and stern light and front or side rails add value. If existing wood isn't rotted away, consider repairing before replacing. Repaired, stained, epoxy saturated and varnished consoles can look real nice. |

Regarding engine, none included. I'm thinking towards a 70 HP 4stroke Suzuki, which will cost much more than the boat. |

My dad bought his sakonnet for $1,920 out the door. Powered by a V-4 90hp. Suzuki, 1989. JAZZ ;) |

$1,920 escalated at 4%/yr would bring it to $3,200. If that includes the engine, there must be some other dynamics going on relative to price and value (or $1,500 for just boat and trailer is high). I wonder what the right size engine for the old 16 footers is? |

To Red Lightning and Bugsy G. I have the basic seatbox assembly from a '72 Sakonnet. It is designed for, but does not include the reversing seatback. Email me if interested. Regards to all members. John |

Red, It probably is the dumbest thing you ever thought about doing. It also would elevate you to superstar status in this forum and bring you untold satisfaction. What if you overpaid by 50%? That would mean that you pissed away $750 bucks. While not insignificant, imagine your self on your restored Sakonnet, cruising at 25 mph on a perfect day, knowing that this is the boat that YOU restored. There are not many long time boaters (including most Whaler owners) who haven’t pissed away 750 bucks. I doubt that even at worst, that 750 bucks is your downside risk. It is likely to be only 250 – 500 bucks. It is quite possible that $1500 is a reasonable price. Go for it. If you don’t you will always kick yourself. Don’t forget the education value of the project. When you get done you will understand gel –coating, wood refinishing, engine mounting, trailer restoration, and west system epoxy. What would you pay to have a good understanding of those topics? Sport PS. You didn’t say if you were married. If you are, forget everything I said. |

You do not have to re-gelcoat...there is this stuff called paint that works wonders on old boats. It also does not fade like gelcoat but will scratch easier. |

To 13sport...your logic is impecable; I'll use it with my wife (yes I'm married) all but the last sentence :) |

To John from Sandy Hook: Believe it or not, everything on the boat is original except for the engine. On the seat there is the ring in the middle. It was used at one time to tow skiers! It also has the original plug-in spot light which is really cool. But doesn't work :(. Thank you JAZZ ;) |
