I am now taking prepaid orders for The Boston Whaler Catalog Collection on CD-ROM. I encourage you all to order now so I can pay Dan to burn the first batch of CDs. The first batch of CDs will ship by the end of the month.

The details:

I have set the price of the Boston Whaler Catalog Collection on CD-ROM at $59. The shipping is included in this price for residents of the US and Canada. If you would like to order a set, send a check or money order for $59.00 to:

Tom W. Clark
7015 Alonzo Avenue NW
Seattle, WA 98117-5323

If you would like to use a credit card you may do so by using PayPal (you can also use PayPal to send funds from a bank account.)

I have set up a simple web page that describes the contents of the Boston Whaler Catalog Collection:

There is a PayPal "Buy Now" button there to simplify the ordering process for those who wish to use PayPal.

Good question. I should have included this information before.

Each set of CDs will be mailed via US Postal Service First Class Mail. Orders going to Canada will be mailed via US Postal Service Airmail Letter Post.

My experience in sending material and CDs back and forth across the country suggests it takes no more than four days to go from Seattle to most any city in the continental US. I am not sure how long it takes to points in Canada.

I need addresses for US Mail, not UPS or FedEx. The CD set will arrive in a 6 x 9 padded mailer.

Just to be clear here: The CDs are not ready for distribution just yet. They will be mailed out by the end of the month but not much before then.

Wow. It's finally done. I'm blown away by your work and your tenacity. I've got one on order. My dad had a drawer in his home office during the seventies which would include a few Playboys as well as a couple of the brochure covers shown on your website (esp. the one on the bottom right). Although as a pre-adolescent sneaking glimpses into his desk I enjoyed the centerfolds, the Advisor and the "party jokes" I spent way more time ogling the Whaler brochures.

Also I currently have some machinery being build for me just north of Albany, NY and therefore I go for meetings down there a few times a month. Next time around I hope to have a chat with your Dan Miller - I bet we have some mutual friends.

Hi Tom. I tried to sign up with Pay Pal three times and it kept returning me to the same screen without completing the transaction. My card is valid, and I'm not getting error messages, so I have no idea why the transaction will not go through. I call the Pay Pal "help" number and the guy I spoke to directed me through a convoluted process to set up an account through their site....I guess I'll just send you a check...

Thanks for the good responses folks!

To those few who have had trouble with PayPal, I do not really know what the problem is. I have heard that there seems to be a problem with some sort of "looping" back to where you started from. Do I have this right?

I exchanged some email with Terry Shaw who had some trouble ordering yesterday. He was afraid he had double ordered. It turns he had not ordered at all and the problem ended up being the security settings on his computer which would not accept cookies.

For PayPal to work, your computer is going to have to accept cookies. In Terry's case, he reset his security, made the order and then reverted back to his initial settings and dumped the cookies that PayPal had installed.

Remember, you do not need to go through the PayPal button on my web page. You can also just go to your PayPal account (or set one up) and then just send payment to my email address:

My advice, if you don't like PayPal, is to not use it. I am accepting payment via PayPal for your convenience, not mine. In all honesty, I would prefer you just send a check as PayPal is charging me $2.01 for every order.

Try again. If it doesn't work, send me an email and weíll straighten things out.

No, there is no discount for contributors of catalogs. They are receiving free sets of CDs.

Tom W Clark posted 02-15-2003 12:00 PM ET (US)     Profile for Tom W Clark  Send Email to Tom W Clark

There was no 1989 catalog, just as there was no 1982, 1986 or 1987 catalog. There is, however, a very nice Temptation brochure from 1987.

We will be updating the collection if material becomes available, in fact we are already doing so.

I do hope that you understood I was kidding you on the discount-for-contributors issue. I should have put in one of those little :) deals just to make sure.

I know that you (others?) have 100s of hours into this project over a year's time - and at 59-bucks a pop (shipping included!) the price is more than reasonable for the most extensive, one-of-a-kind resource that exists on the subject. Hell, the builder doesn't even have all this information (until now)!

Free copies to contributors goes above and beyond the call - you ARE my hero:). sammy

At Tom's urging I'm sending my PayPal experience along for those of you who are having difficulty getting your money to Tom. If you're not having problems, please disregard this boring detour.

PayPal would not process my order the first five or six times I tried to place it, because their system didn't like the fact that I was using a credit card they associated with my old address and e-mail. When I finally got through to customer service, which took forever, they refused to delete my old address information so I could use my credit card. They told me that there was nothing I could do via e-mail to update my information; if I want to use my Mastercard I'll have to send PayPal a letter (hard copy)explaining my change in residence and internet provider.

If you're in a similar situation, the system will just route you in circles indefinitely when you try to make a purchase. No error notices will pop up. The system just keeps directing the buyer to complete the same fields that are cleared each time the "continue" button is selected.

The PayPal site is also designed to make it difficult to directly access customer service, so I was 45 minutes into the project before I stumbled on the solution, got through with customer service (a misnomer), and made the purchase with a different card.

Happy Birthday! The good news is your wife bought you a copy of the Boston Whaler Catalog Collection. The bad news is that your wife did not buy you a copy of the Boston Whaler Catalog Collection. No PayPal order was made.

I am sorry some of you are having trouble with PayPal. I do not know what the trouble is but it seems that cookies and up-to-date credit card information are two known problems with making the PayPal system work.

Nobody has unintentionally ordered twice, though I suspect there may a few who think they have ordered when they have not. If you have ordered through PayPal, then you have will have an acknowledgment of the order from PayPal and it will appear in your account history when you visit your PayPal account.

If PayPal is giving you a hard time my advice is to not give them your business. Just send a check instead.

Some more material has cropped up that I think should be included in the Catalog Collection including the new 320 Outrage flyer and post card. My suspicion is that you would prefer to have as complete a collection as possible thus I am having Dan scan this new material as it comes in and add it to the CDs.

The bad news is that I may not be able to ship by the end of the month. A delay of up to one week may result from this eleventh hour addition.

As of yesterday I have begun receiving checks that have been mailed in. To those of you who have sent checks I thank you for the notes and letters that have accompanied the checks. Thereís something about a letter as compared to an email that is just a bit more personal.

I also appreciate the fact that a check allows me to keep the $2.01 that otherwise would go to PayPal.

But I want to emphasize that however you want to pay is fine with me. PayPal is there for your convenience, not mine. If it works for you, thatís great. But if it does not work, donít wear yourself out trying to use it.

I have seen a pre-publication copy of the Catalog collection that Tom has produced. I can tell you that the quality of the scans is excellent. I am very impressed.

Since the original material that was scanned was in the most part itself pre-scanned or half-tone photographs, it is quite difficult to get good results without having moire problems. Unless special precautions are taken, the typical scan of a half-tone image with a computer scanner will produce terrible results, and the images will be filled with an annoying moire.

I am very pleased to say that there is virtually no evidence of moire in any of the images I browsed in Tom's catalogue CD. The quality of the images is excellent and they appear with no artifacts of their origin as half-tones.

The scope of the catalogue is amazing, too.

Hi all. Just wanted to let you know that Dan has finished the final version of the CDs and they were put in the mail to me yesterday. I should have them by Thursday afternoon and will spend Thursday evening proofing them.

If no major problems are found I will authorize Dan to commence the CD burning, insert printing process and he should be able to ship the first batch to Seattle next week.

My goal is to have them in the mail to all of you by Friday March 7th. We lost a full week with the last minute appearance of some new material and Presidents Day weekend.

I feel I need to reiterate again that if you have received a confirmation from PayPal for your order via PayPal, then I have your order and you are on my list with a 6x9 padded mailer with your name and address on it just waiting for the CDs to be sealed inside.

You do not need to email me asking if I have received your order. I have.

If you have NOT received an email confirmation from PayPal (and you will get it within minutes or even seconds of a successful order) then you have NOT placed an order.

If you are being looped back to where you started from on the PayPal order form or if you feel there is something fishy going on, then you have NOT placed an order with PayPal.

If you feel like you may have placed two orders, the chances are you have placed NO orders.

I do not know why stupid olí PayPal cannot just give you an error message telling you that something is wrong and what needs to be done to fix it, but they donít. Instead they loop you right back to where you started from. This is very frustrating, I know.

The reason this is happening is that you browser needs to be set to accept cookies. If you have it set up to not accept cookies, then you WILL NOT BE ABLE to order through PayPal.

My best advice is to change the preferences in your browser to accept cookies, place the order and then delete the cookie afterwards if you like.

Or better yet, just mail me a check:

Some of the locals may get theirs as soon as tomorrow. Many of those on the West Coast will see them Monday. By the end of next week all of you should have received yours.

Great job! Thanks for your hard work!

Regards, Jay

Dear Tom,

My CD-ROM catalog arrived last week. My decision to purchase it was a bad one...I can't stop looking at all the images!

Thank you for doing such a beautiful job.

Was out of town for 10 days or I would have responded earlier. The Whaler Catalog CD is a great addition to add to my WHaler information. Congratulations on the fine product that was put together. Thanks again for making the effort.
Take care,

Just returned from a business trip and my CD Rom was there. Opened it and played it before I unpacked. A day later I am still not unpacked, but I can report the Whaler catalog is a treat. Thanks.

Lo hai fatto anche in Italiano?
Did you made also in Italian Languages?

No, I haven't released the Italian version yet. I'm still waiting for 100 prepaid orders before doing so ; )

The good news is that there are thousands of color (and B/W) photographs in the catalog collection of the boats themselves and they are a joy to behold in any language.

I have sold the Boston Whale Catalog Collection to Whaler enthusiasts as far away as the Netherlands and Chile.

Hi Tom,

I am wondering how the CDROM's are selling.... They are the best investment a Whaler addict could get. I was just curious if possible to learn how many of us here, have actually bought the set.

I have sold 165 sets of the Boston Whaler Catalog Collection, which has been enough for me to recover my cash outlay and actually make in excess of $1 for ever hour I spent working on this project.

There was one Forum member who sent me a very nice email encouraging me to set a much higher price for the Catalog Collection. He was convinced I would sell 2000 of them! I really appreciated his enthusiasm but those numbers were probably a bit optimistic, to say the least.

My goal at the start was simply to pull together all this material and make it available to the fanatics of continuousWave. I did want to cover my costs and I have done that and am pleased.

I never really imagined the Catalog Collection would reach a broader audience because I figured that if a Whaler enthusiast were computer literate enough to be able to operate and navigate these CDs then they had probably already found what is, by far, the best source of Whaler information on the internet, continuousWave.

$59 is a lot of money to spend just to look at old catalogs and I think it is only those who truly appreciate and admire the Boston Whaler that are willing to spend that kind of money.

On the other hand, this collection represents an amazing bargain for those who do want to see all these old catalogs. Old Whaler catalogs are highly collectible and desirable. I recently sold a 1973 catalog for over $200! I sold a mere Options and Replacement Parts catalog for almost $60 at one point to a guy in Germany so the price of the Collection on CD-ROM is but a tiny fraction of what it would take to amass this set of literature in hardcopy form.

There were a few people here who were concerned the value of their own collections of Whaler literature would be diminished with the publication of all these catalogs on CD, but that has not proven to be the case. If anything, it has spurred interest in these old catalogs and made them even more collectible.

The one thing I find interesting in my sales is that of all the people who initially said they were eager to buy a set of CDs when they became available, I only ever heard from about half of them. There were about 50 or so very vocal Forum members who never ordered a set.

Here is that original thread where we talked about the idea (one of the longest threads in Forum history):

Just loaded my CD and found the '88 Commercial Products Catalog. I cannot believe how much I've learned in the last hour about my Sentry 22. It's as though I was there while they ordered it!

I have the 260 Mercruiser and therefore have many special options included with the power option. looks like a lot better buy than it did a week ago!

Just wanted to add my thanks, certainly for the work on the CDs, but also for your continuing contribution to this forum. (I was waiting for someone to tell the truth about towing folks) (Hell, yes, you help'em) and was glad that you did.

The Sentry will hit the water in the Coquille River within the month, Lord willing. Thanks again.

Hi Tom,

That surprises me. I would have though that you would have sold many more sets than that. I can only say that the people who have not bought one, are truly missing out on a great collection. I look at my set so much that I copied it all to my hard drive and now just read of the hard drive. As well I have made a back up copy and put them in a safe place just incase the house were to burn down and if someone were to break in and steal them.... I could not imagine life without them. My wife does not quite understand how I can possibly spend the time I do looking at the boat specs... But I have been a Whaler fan since I was a kid. Im my summers when a was a teenager I actually worked for the local Whaler dealer and when I got older I had the opportunity to work with the largest dealer in Nova Scotia - Sealand Industries Ltd. It has only been in the last few years that I have lost touch with the inside track on Whalers. So, thanks again for a great job.

Before I ordered my set, I thought the price was a little high.
After hours and hours of browsing through it,I realized it was worth at least double the cost.
Anyone that has an interest in Whalers is really missing out on a terrific wealth of info if you don't order it.
Thank you, Tom W Clark, for all the hard work.

I found that is the new link to Tom's site.

Actually, is not the new link, but merely an additional link to an identical file.

I do not know why this link , which is in my profile does not work today. It worked last week and should be working now.

Wonderful job, only a labor of love or an office with a staff of 12 could have put this together.
The price lists and option lists are very interesting.
I discovered the 21 Walkaround had an optional transom shower. I wondered what the "fresh water pump" switch on the instrument panel was for.
I recommend this cd to everyone.
