I sold my 22OR night before last and let me tell you it brought big old alligator tears to my eyes. You’ve heard the old adage “The two happiest days in a boat owners life is when he/she buys the boat and when he/she sells the boat.” This is absolutely untrue when it comes to Whalers. I’ve owned many boats and I was not so deeply impacted when I parted with them, but this was my first Whaler. My wife’s reaction was less than supportive…she just doesn’t understand. This exacerbated my sorrow.

I had to part with her (the Whaler that is), for various reasons, and man was it tough. Hopefully, I can find the perfect 15 Sport with a CC or Montauk to help me through the grieving process. I’m hoping by finding a new classic it will be like getting a new puppy when your dog dies.

Ok, enough of my whining…lets hear your sob stories.

Haven't gone through it yet but am about to.
I have always wanted a 15' Whaler and finally found one in Texas.
My Dad's 13' Whaler was at my house because I had borrowed it to fish in that spring. When I told Dad that I was bringing his boat back to him he told me that he doesn't use it anymore and that I can keep it or sell it. It's been in the family since 1977. In fact, I found the boat for Dad when I was off at college. I hate to get rid of it but the 15' suits my needs more for bay fishing. Can't keep both, I need the garage space. I've caught a lot of fish in that boat and it's going to be a sad day watching it leave the driveway. ( I may lose my nerve at the last minute and sell the 15')

Keep the 15....trust me.

Saddest day was when I sold my 19' revenge to my Dad's friend and our quasi-neighbor. getting rid of the boat was not sad, it was dropping by to see them ripping up the deck because they wanted to check the tank for leaks.....what a botch job and truly disheartening.

I made the mistake of "loaning" my 13 to a relative for a couple of years.

My saddest moment was seeing the condition it was in when I reclaimed it.

Saddest and luckiest all in one! When I was fifteen I was preparing to take my boat across town to the public boat ramp. I was to meet my father so we could "trailer" the boat up to NH for a week long vacation at my uncles lake. Before I left the marina a buddy of mine(He also had a Whaler) asked if I'd like to go with him for a plane ride with the marina's owner.I declined and told him why then went on my way. That night in NH I saw on the evening news that the plane had crashed taking the lives of all on board!

Second saddest moment - I had to go wade fishing from a buddy's 22 Triton today...pituey! I'm contemplating whether or not the 2 5 lb. speckled trout were worth the misery.

Perhaps I should stay away from the water until I get another Whaler.

Florida, the memories of fishing with your father on that boat are worth more than that boat. I have pictures of fishing on my old Montauk with my dad and my kids. I sold the boat almost ten years ago - and I've regretted it ever since.

If you sell that little 13' you'll regret it a thousand times over - I guarantee it. If you're like me you'll have that money spent several times before the year is out -and nothing you buy with the money will approach the value of the memories that boat revives every time you look at it.

The Sailor's Dictionary defines "abandon" as the state in which one buys, or sells one's boat.

I witnessed a Whaler accident once. A father and son were cavorting about Lagoon Pond in a 13 Sport. The father fell overboard and the boat went into a hard right turn. The force of the turn threw the little boy to the opposite side of the boat and he couldn't reach the controls. The Whaler circled around the man in the water, striking him with every pass. I will never forget the sight of that little boy clinging to the seat and screaming "Daddy! Daddy!"

If you have a kill switch, make sure you wear the lanyard. You may have the safest boat, but it's only as safe as the person at the helm.

whale on.

newbie perspective

As a brand new and first time whaler owner as of last August. (I only had it out for three sprees including the winterizing bout)

The saddest whaler moment to date for me was putting the canvas on my 13' supersport and praying to God and wood nymphs that they would watch her and treat her well. She is chained to a poplar in the middle of the woods in Northern Minnesota.

I'm happy to report that she is fairing well and the canvas cover is doing its job. Still hanging on day to day, hoping and praying she can get along with the scary things in the woods!

I guess this will be humorous in years to come when compared to other adventures a will then have under belt, ha.

Interesting that an inordinate number of architects and engineers are whalers and members of this forum...might say something about the boats. This observation makes me neither happy nor SAD, jimh, just to keep on topic.

Selling my wonderful Dauntless 14 knowing full well I was going to be Whalerless for at least 2 seasons.

Knowing that I sold my '73 21' OR to my aunt three years ago this month and it hasn't moved out of the storage barn that I left it at since. This after I rescued it from a six year nap...
