I have searched the forum but have not found a relevant post for the price of a 1987 montauk. Maybe I overlooked something in my search...if so I apologize.

Fella here in Va. is asking $8k for a 1987 montauk with a 90hp yam same year. Have not laid eyes on the boat.

Looking for a price range here from you BW purists.

according to the owner....engine has new lower unit and regularly fouls a the lower plug. Sounds like its a rebuild and that doesn't sound good

Told me the hull needs some TLC, no damage, no electronics, no cover, bowrail, trailer with 13 inch tires, new bearings and hubs last spring, original gas tank went bad has 2 6 gallon plastics under RPS.

Just trying to get an idea and prepare myself if it needs to be repowered.

Like I said just looking for a range. BUCVALU has the hull at between $4 and $4600. Real market will never let that happen on a montauk.

Thanks all

With the current engine I would say $8k is a tad steep. For reference I have an 84 Newport on a 97 Aluminum trailer with a 95 Johnson 88hp just rebuilt in October and boat is real cherry, I am asking $8500.

I agree with Bigshot on this, it may be a bit too steep. Sounds like you need to do a bit of negotiation with the seller. There are alot of other market factors to consider that effect price (eg. location, season, model availability, ect.) The same boat here in the SF bay area could go for $9,500 in spring when everyone is hot to get out on the water, and then $7,000 in fall, after the fishing seasons close, and the weather turns grey. The boat is really only worth what others in your area are willing to pay. For your particular boat, it seems reasonable to pay between $6,500 to $9,500.00, but again, that's my estimate for my area, and it is dependent on hull condition, accessories, and engine performance. I would also have the engine checked out by a mechanic prior to buying, so you know what you are getting into.

Get the motor checked over, and have a compression test done. That lower cylinder fouling out could be a weak coil also.

Ahoy, Jimithing.

First: on a classic Montauk, the year shouldn't matter, only condition, equipment and power.

The engine problem couold be anything from poor tune to lost compression, but view it as worth a few hundred bux, and a gamble at that.

Fresh water boat? No bowrail? Look for unsealed screwholes.

Thirteen inch tires are not necessarily a negative. That's what my Montauk has been on for the last 10K miles.

No electronics, questionable engine, no bowrail. $6K tops.

Good luck.

This is all good stuff.....I am appreciative of the responses.

JB

The boat does have a bowrail, but you are right....no electronics and a very questionable engine and a saltwater boat.....6k seems right on the head.

What would new 12 gallon tank run me for that bad boy?

BS

you mentioned awhile back that guy in NY was selling Yam 2strokes pretty cheap....you have a website for him? Thanks

Nope....but I have a sweet 17'.

The only line I have right now is on new Suzukis in FL. I also believe if you buy a Mercury you can use the Yammie controls and prop, just need a new wiring harness.

You need to remember that the price of a boat is only the beginning.
You should also factor into the price apartment rental, mcdonalds for the kids on visiting days, and umm oh yeah, half of everything you own when your lovely bride sees the third whaler pull into the driveway.

You may be my hero, but your still not sleeping on the coach.

I bought a 1989 17' Montauk last month 90hp evinrude same year for $ 6200.00. Looking for an honest opionion. Did I get screwed? I've had it out in the Gulf twice so far and it seems to check out ok. I would like to have the teak refinished if anyone knows somewhere that does quality work.

Paid $5k in 2000 for 1984 montauk with 1985 Johnson 90hp, trailer with no electronics. Hull was oxidized, woodwork worn, loose bowrail, no bottom paint, saltwater boat. Sold the engine in 2002 for $1k and put a 4s suzuki on it. Hope this helps.

This should make you guys feel good. I paid $6000 +tax for a stripped 1996 montauk hull. All it had was a mills bimini top and the guard rails, evertyhing else was gone. :)

I bought an '89 Montauk in fall of 2001. Hull was in excellent shape, no electronics, trailer was in good shape. Paid $8K. Had to put about $500 in the motor for new mounts and a tune. Other than that, she runs great! I get compliments every time I'm at the ramp.
