Sad story: a 15 foot Whaler is hit by a 25 foot Whaler the Oakland Estuary at Alameda, CA, at about 6:00 pm on Saturday, Feb 23rd. The 50 year old operator of the 15 footer dies. Two separate stories appeared in the Alameda Star-Times. I have found no details other than the attached. None of the other Bay Area media picked up the story that I can tell. What a tragic tale. It is curious that the paper mentioned the boat brand by name. In this case, did it matter? |

Very sad story. Appears that the person operating the larger craft did not know how to overtake a smaller craft. In Florida you are responsible for what your wake does to others. I watched the local news tonight. A car and a SUV (Older small Ford Explorer)collided. The news media never mentioned the vehicle name. Only that it was a SUV. Even though the car that hit it, a Cadilac, which they did mention, was the larger vehicle. All this negative hipe on SUVs. Makes one think why the media classified the 15 footer BOSTON WHALER as a speed boat. The media can really put a spin on it to the untrained reader.

JimK: While I agree with your view of media spin...I don't believe the newspaper report said what you think. No mention is made of "speed boat". The only reference is as follows: quote: WhalerGoFar |

Being that they are both Whalers, I wonder if it was someone who posted to this site on occasion? How sad. I'm not surprised though, that Oakland Estuary can get very congested. There are a ton of sailboats, small boats, large boats, go fast boats and even rowing boats all over the place. Also, the number one No. Cal Whaler dealer is located there and uses that estuary to test drive their boats. They might know what happened. I will call them. |

There are about 800 deaths each year caused by boating accidents. Cf. http://www.apg.army.mil/SIBO/btsafe98.htm The involvement of two Boston Whaler boats makes this particular incident more germane for discussion than most, but I think it should be on the basis of the seamanship and circumstances of the collision. As these details are published, it would be good to have reference to them appended to this thread. As for expressions of of compassion and sympathy, they would be much more effective if sent directly to those involved. Perhaps 11-footer will volunteer to obtain the appropriate address and post it here. |

WhalerGoFar, I stand corrected. I am sure that others probably thought the same being that the word "SPEED" was inserted. I read the article a little to fast. Still a tragedy. Still has some spin on it. Thanks for the correction witsendfl JimK |

It is always sad when someone loses life in an accident. I wondered how many fatalities there would have been if everyone hadn't been in whalers. |

This was actually in the local TV news the night of the accident. I remember it because I went boating the same day and the mention of the boston whaler on the news. I think it occured around 6PM and it was probably near dark here by then. Sad and unfortunate. |

It was probably still fairly light at 6 p.m. Last night, I went out right at 6:00 to do some work on the trailer, and could still see well for 15-20 minutes, and went in because I finished, not because it got dark. I'm about 60 miles from the accident scene.

I lived on Alameda in the early 90s and worked at the old Naval Air Station right across from the accident site. Used to be lots of high powered boats on that waterway acting like they owned it with no regard for other. Kinda sounds like the intercoastal I frequent in NC now. Too many new boaters with no regard for others or that have never been properly taught the ways of the water. A safety course should be mandatory for anyone new to boating. |
