Hi everyone! I had to ship my boat to get detailed today and I put the battery in her. Charged it up, everything works and I got this smile on my face that everything is going to be ok right! WRONG!!!! I wanted to raise the motor for traveling and nothing worked on it. Pushing the button on the throttle, the motor goes down, but not up. Its a 70hp. Johnson. I don't know if the switch is corroded in it or what. It probably is. Please help!!!! JAZZ

Could be switch or relay under motor cover. One relay for up and one for down. If you switch the relays around and the opposite does not work then it is relay.

Had the same problem a couple of years ago. I had one relay bad, diagnosis is just like he said. If you take the cover off the motor, you can hear the relay clicking. Cost about twenty bucks. |

Also, you have a up/down switch on the side of the motor. Try that one. If still no go. Then its probably the relay. There are two. One to go up and the other to go down. Swap them and then give it a try. If it goes up, then you know which relay is bad. |

If the color combo is the same. The BLUE wire + ground means UP or "TO THE SKY" The GREEN wire + ground means DOWN or "TO THE EARTH" Last resort after along period of storage is to TAP on the side of the external pump to get the magnets inside to break free. The pump switch should be in up or down position w/ power applied. Does the switch on the motor work?Hope this helps a little witsendfl JimK |

Thank you for all the replies! There is no switch on the motor for it. Just on the throttle. Could there be a corroded terminal in either the engine or the throttle as well? Once again, thank you for all replies. JAZZ |

If no switch on motor, then relays are likely mounted in an external box somewhere. Thump there with plastic handle of screw driver. If replacements are necessary, you can get the OMC one for $20, or a generic equivalent from an auto parts store with the plastic case for around $5. Carry the original with you, You want one with exactly the same pin diagram and function. My VW has about 3 of these same relays on it in various circuits, all stock circuitry. Being a neat freak, I mounted my external box relays under the engine cover like a stock engine. The only thing missing is the switch in the lower cowling, as Bugsy notes. |
