I am wondering what is the nicest 13' BW anyone has seen. I am looking for ideas for my restoration. I am thinking of putting a center console in it too. Also whats the biggest engine anyone has on a 13?

Many years ago a friend had a 55 on his. Too much motor. I just repowered with a new Merc carbed 40 and it is plenty. |

Biggest engine would be 60-70hp. I have seen a few 13's with 2cyl 60hp OMC's. I have also seen a 3cyl 60 or 70hp on a supersport 13. |

That what I was thinking no more than a 60 hp 4 stroke or maybe a Merc 60 carbed. I am taking start to finish pictures of my project that I will post somewhere for everyone to see. It will like no other whaler anyone has seen. |

I have a 60HP on my 1975 13. It handled like a dream on the Louisiana bayous. If your running in Flat water I would recommend a lighweight 60HP. |

I saw a 13 in Newport, RI with a 65 Suzuki on it. I personally wouldn't go with a center console on the 13, it goes against the whole premise of the boat. I saw a 40th anniversary 13 at Lauderdale Marine a few years back(a leftover), I think those were the nicest, save for the 30 hp merc on it. They had 40 years of improvements on their side but the mahogany seats and blue interior were truly vintage- |

In the early 60's, in Mystic Connecticut I saw a 13 with an in-line 6 "dockbuster" Mercury on it. I was told that the engine was a Mark 78, which would have been 70 horsepower. The boat had also been customized with a deck over the front half of the boat. The deck was built exactly like the deck on the Penn Yan runaabout that I was in when I saw it. I watched the boat for about an hour, including a period of water skiing with it.I will never forget that Whaler. |

My first whaler was a 1966 Sport 13' with a 1976 Mercury 4-cylinder short shaft 50hp with MANUAL START. It had no battery. It was so EASY to rope start with those 4 small cylinders. It sounded like a honda CBX motorcycle. We could slalom ski very easily and we barefooted a few times with it too. Practically NO wake & 42mph. |

If you are looking at for a big 4 stroke for it, hows about a Fisher Pierce Bearcat 55 hp... They run fantastic, run forever on little gas (1 quart for 40 minutes trolling), and you can get one real cheap too... I had one on my Nauset for years, but then upgraded to the Bearcat 85 hp... Been runnin that one for many years too... |

If you are looking at a "restoration" you don't need ideas. A restoration restores the boat to original condition. |

I am surprised at all the high horsepower rigs people have seen and enjoyed. I saw a 13 a few years ago with an old 55 monster on the transom and the transom had large cracks running down both stern corners which certainly looked like there was too much power and weight back there....but maybe that particular boat had been abused in other ways....Dave |

The 50 tohatsu 2 stroke is a nice engine for the 13 and very light weight. |
