It strikes me that focusing on a common interest can build friendships where they might not otherwise flourish. Maybe we're more tolerant of others when they seem more like us. Whatever the reason, this site brings a diverse group of people together on common ground. We build friendships and benefit from each other's posts. That's a wonderful thing. We all benefit from the wisdom and friendship others share. Unfortunately, I think, we're less prone to share when we're in the middle of a dispute that is unrelated to our shared love. I think it is a disservice to this site and it's members to devolve into political debates that are not even peripherally related to whalers and boating. I understand that everybody here has strong beliefs about the most important of our political and social challenges, but expressing the beliefs here inevitably creates barriers, and I would prefer not to emphasize barriers that inhibit our ability to share a common love. Just my .02 I'm not reluctant to share my beliefs, and I'm not reluctant to fight when I think it's necessary, but it's nice to have a refuge that remains a sanctuary for the discussion of the recreational distractions we all love - especially in light of the fact that the disputes don't serve any constructive purpose. Venting our spleens here isn't likely to produce any change in policy or public opinion - but it is likely damage relationships we all value. Alex

Oops! Sorry guys. If I could cut and paste this into the Meta Forum right now I'd do it. Maybe Jimh could do that for me. Or maybe he could just delete it. Maybe keeping my mouth shut would have been a more effective means of making my point. I seldonm have the courage to do that. ;-) |

Alkar, y'need t'be a speech writer or a preacher. Yer that good, really. Only thing Ah'll add is an observation that when two parties get into a political spat, both sides tend t'swell up so brim full of mighty 'wit they consider themselves. And they're usually both about half right. The latest spat's no exception. |

Alkar,Well put and very important. I fish, sail, and now Whaler to escape the discord which is an integral and unfortunate part of my professional life. I note that you are a law enforcement officer...perhaps you share my feelings. Spirited political debate is a wonderful, important and very American pass-time, especially in times such as these; but please, you nice folks of whatever political persuasion...not in this forum.
