I recently purchased a old blue 13 the wood console is different then any photos i've seen on this site. It is a center console not a side steer. It seems to be original wood work,it's not a sourpuss because it dosent have the wrap around rail and seat back. I was just wondering if any of you know more about this particular center steer console and if it is original and about what year it was made . I cannot find the hull id # because the interior was painted. Any info would be appreciated
Thanks

Probably a sourpuss and railing is missing or a sport that the console rotted and they used a sourpuss. It is easy to distinguish a REAL whaler console from a home made.

FYI: Having owned 4 "wraparound" railings in Whalers I will say I almost can't blame them for bagging it. They are a real PITA. The bolts are constantly coming loose no matter what I did and the rear "T" rot to pieces and can not(until recently) be replaced due to the one piece rail and the bend in it. You would either have to cut the rail to get a new t on it or now CMI makes 2 piece T's like a bagel in half.

Whaler built two 13' center steer models .13'Sourpuss and 13' Sport center steer. The only difference was the Sourpuss had the wrap around helm seat and cushion package. This is from 1972 price list.

seaya,
My understanding is that pre 72 Sourpuss came w/ a 15 in transom and blue interior. I have a 72 w/ a 20 in transom and tan interior. I can email you photos of my 72 ot show you a correct interior if needed.

Great boat

If it's a Center Steer (not center console) model, then it had a wrap around rail and seat back. The wrap around rail and seat back was an option for both the Center Steer Sport and the Side Steer Sport models, but the Center Steer Sport never came without the wrap around rail and seat back. This doesn't mean it couldn't have been removed later on.

Both the Center Steer and Sourpuss models were built in blue interior with 15" transom and tan interior with 20" transom.

A Sourpuss model is a Center Steer Sport model with the addition of the blue denim cushion set.

Tom,

My 1976 13' with center steering only had side rails when I bought her. There is no evidence that she ever had the wrap around rail and seat back. I thought she was a sport model. I am not clear from your post what model you think that I have.

Some text on the 1974 catalog page-07 says that "removal of rail and cushions from Sourpuss makes Center Steering Sport model."

Tom,

Also the 1973 catalog page-04 shows a center steer sport model with only side rails. I'm not trying to be a smart a**, I just love your catalog CD. As you can tell I spend way too much time looking at it.

Doug,

That's interesting what you report. I would call what you have a Sport 13 Center Steer.

I had a 1976 Sport 13 Center Steer and it had the wrap around rail and seat back.

Looking at the 11/76 price list it appears the wrap around rail an seat back option were separate from the center steer option, so you may be right about your boat being original. I've never seen one though.
