I'm looking at a 1983 model and wondered how the older hull designs compare to the newer models. Any comments appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Hula,

I have a 1966 hull and it is smirkless. Yours has a smirk in the front. What I think, I think that the older hulls styles ride nicer than the newer ones. For instance, the newer montauk is heavier, and wider. The older montauk hull is a bit more narrow, yet is lighter. My smirkless hull, in my opinion, handles waves quite well in following seas. (I think how the hull is formed makese a big difference).

I have not rid in a newer montauk, but I have in a smirky one like yours. They are both really good. The good thing about yours, is that you have a deeper V in the hull and the smirk. Mine is nice because its a bit more shallow draft. I hoped I helped you out a little bit. Thank you

There are three variants of hull produced with the MONTAUK name. From 1961-1976 there was the original hull referred to as a 16-MONTAUK. In c.1976 a significant redesign of the hull was made, which stayed in production until 2002 and was known as the 17-MONTAUK. In 2002 a completely different hull design was produced as the 170-Montauk

I understand you are considering the purchase of a 1983 17-MONTAUK. Do you wish comments on comparing it to a pre-1976 MONTAUK or to a post 2002 MONTAUK? It is not clear to me from your message which comparison you are asking about.

Have you read the Reference Section article on the 16/17-foot hulls? This may provide you with some information on this topic.

See: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/

If you are seeking a comparison between the classic 16/17-foot MONTAUK (produced for about 40-years until 2002) and the very recently producted 170-MONTAUK (first produced in 2002), you should also read the Reference Section article:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/170Montauk/

In addition, there is a CETACEA section article on the new MONTAUK-170 with a lengthy follow message thread. This will give you much more feedback on the MONTAUK-170:

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage58.html

And there are probably 50 or more pictures of the classic 16/17-Montauk in the CETACEA section of the website. The photographs, their captions, the narrative text that accompanies them, and the follow-up message threads that discuss them all contain a great deal of information on these MONTAUK's.

If all this information fails to slake your thrist for knowledge about these three different hulls, I suggest you post a follow up question here.

Thanks both for the replies. I have a 1964 13 Classic now. Love the little boat, but would like to go bigger. Just wondering how the ride compares in heavier water. I would assume the Montauk would handle it much better. Thanks again.... Dick M.
