I picked up an older whaler (serial#33982)and I'm looking for some advice. She's stripped down and upside down. The bottom has been sanded down to the glass and the drain tube has been removed.I'd like to check to see if the foam is holding water.Any advice would be appreciated.

I have an old 13ft which had water in the foam. One way to check is to check it's weight. I couldn't do this, as I had already put a few coats of epoxy on and built up my transom. Another way to go is to drill a hole into the foam where you think it might be wet (mine was beacuse screws to secure the battery were drilled through the floor where water commonly pooled). I stuck bits of newspaper in the hole until they came out dry. Depending on how much water, you may need to drill several holes.

Chris: mbenotti's advice is right on the money. However, in the FAQ section of the Forum this topic is covered a bit more extensively. Click this link:

When I bought my 17, it had a crack in the bottom because the guy beat the boat like you wouldn't believe. And the foam gave away. I was practically in tears for what he did with that boat. Anyways I had the crack repaired and I got most of the water out because I cranked the heat up and was sanding. (the guy painted the boat yellow!!!!!) If you would like to see pics of the boat, Please check my profile out.

You boat may have rotten stringers in it. Mine probably does, but I had most of it repaired and most of the water out of it. Thanks

Thanks for the advice.I checked out the Reference and it helped out alot.A couple of 1/4" were drilled in different locations on the boat and it seems dry.The boats been out of the water and in a garage for about 5 years so it had some time to dry-out.I stripped the gel-coat down to the glass because of cracking, to fix the chine and hind corner on one side were it rubbed the dock from the previous owner.I used some West Marine epoxy. Now I want to seal and paint the bottom and looking for more advice like products and techiques thanks.
