Looking to buy a 27'BW Cuddy with T230 inboards. If the engines are shot, would this boat be "ideal" to convert to outboards? The boat has direct drive. Or would you all recommend just rebuilding the engines?

Everybody I have talked to speaks very favorably of the 27 with inboards. Better ride, better fuel economy, I'd go for a rebuild.

Dreamer, you would have to either put a bracket, or tear out the transom & put a new one, as there is no deadrise on an inboard transom to accomodate outboards.
It's generally straight up & down, not tilted in at the bottom for outboards.

I ran one of those 27s with the twin inboards at a dealer meeting. It's a sweet ride but not as fast as the same boat with outboards. I would stick with the inboards for the ride and handling.

You are looking at $12,00 to $14,000 per outboard, $2,000 for the all the trimmings needed with the ob's and at least $5,000 for the bracket. So if everything goes good you with have new 225,250s obs for at least $30,000 to $35,000, my guesstimate. And the problem is you dont know how she will act with the cg that far back or how she will handle. For around the same or alittle more you can have twin diesels. They will be more economical overall, and will problaly give a better ride. They are also safer and more economical. They only lose to obs on speed. They will also have a higher resale. I say go with diesels or rebuilt but dont go with the obs, just my 2 cents.

captbone;
What size diesel engines are recommended for this size boat? Also, what make?

I would go with the yanmars for the vessel just a little bit smaller than the engine you have in there now.
