I have searched in all catagories for a past post on battery location. I can not find it so I will start the topis over again. I am moving my battery out of the CC and need to get advice on where to locate it on the Stern. 1988 Newtauk. I usually stand slighty to the right of the CC when under way |

Why the move? I personally think the cc is the best place.Takes up no deck space there. |

The few times I had to remove the battery it was a real pain in the butt. I plan on building a shelf and max out the storage area in the cc. I thought I would give it a try this season as I am repowering. If it is in the way I will put the battery back in the cc with a cut out on the new shelf. I may cut the hole in the shelf just in case I move the battery back in. I will cover the hole for the time being rather than having to remove the new shelf at a later date to cut the hole if I do indeed move the battery back. There was a thread some time ago on this topic and I can not find it with the Search engine or by going through old threads |

John O, Perhaps you should give consideration to mounting the battery over the sump cover in the stern. The hold-down's can be secured directly to the sump cover, thereby preventing your having to drill holes in the deck. This will shorten the battery cables significantly, and allows for a clean installation. My 17' Alert has this set-up, and it both looks and works well. May I suggest further using the SS battery hold-down kit used by Boston Whaler's Commercial & Government Products. It is easy to use, secure, aesthetically pleasing, and requires less attention than plastic or brass substitues. Another option is to keep the battery beneath the console, but cut a hole in the console floor to allow it to be mounted to the deck. PM |

PMUCCIOLO, I like the idea of mounting over the sump. John |

Put the battery back under the cc, it is a great location for it (gives more deck space, and distributes more weight forward, go ahead and add @25 lbs. to that engine if located in the stern). how often do you have to remove it that makes it an issue? If you don't like it in the stern you are gonna have to buy new longer cables for the new engine to get it back to the cc. Additionally if you cover the sump with it you are gonna have to release the tie down everytime you want to remove the drain plug. Different strokes for different folks. just my $0.02 |

I have the cables that connected my old Johnson 88hp to the battery in the CC. I am in the midst of have a 75ho Merc installed and decided to move the battery out for the time being to see if it is a better set up. I assume I can use the cables for the Johnson on the Merc if I choose to move battery back into the CC. The cables are dirty, but look in very good condition. I may need to replace the terminal connectors. I am not sure of the gauge, but they are thick. |

The battery does not have to be moved to access the drain plug if it is installed properly (along the leading edge of the sump cover). There is adequate room for me to reach into the sump on the Alert without even touching the battery box. |
