Have never been a fan of fishfinders showing artist conception fishes swimming through the aquascape. Are the hits on a 240 blue the same thing in a different form or are they the actual return from targets in the water. Are schools of bait and clouds of shrimp visible ? If anyone has used one I would like to read your oppinion. Also open to suggestions of a better unit at a similar price range.
While on subject of fishfinders heard scuttlebutt in commercial fishing fleet that halibut don't show up on fishfinders because they don't have air bladders-sounds pretty fishy to me, but I've never looked when I had one on a line under the boat. Any of you guys ever seen one?
Sorry about the shotgun approach to question asking. Thanks, Greg

I have also looked at the 240 blue amd would like to put it on both of my boats one for off shore and the other for the flats. Will it work for both? thanks

whaler131-it should work if you buy a second transducer. The best price I've seen was
online marine for 308.oo and 9.95 shipping. I dont remember what their price was for a transom mount transducer but they had them for sale too.
I saw one go on E-bay today for 300.00 at compwestusa + 27.00 shipping and handling. With 27.00 shipping and handling you lose.
I'm still trying to decide if I want to buy one or something different.

I have the 240 Blue and love it. It is very accurate and easy to operate. You can set the fish symbols up or identify them with arches. It has the See-Thru technology that allows you to see fish in structures and thermoclines. The dual frequency will allow you to get the detail you want in shallow or deep water. I have been able to read the bottom at speeds up to 30 mph with the P66 transducer. Lots of pluses with this fishfinder for the money and reliability. It has great visibility in direct sunlight.

Greg,

Schools of baitfish, shrimp, squid etc., do show up on the screen as clouds of activity.

I did the reasearch on this last spring.

I ended up with the Garmin 240.

It compared favorably with the Lowrance X-91 in the specs that matter but was considerably less $$$.

After using it I think it's a great unit. I use it to find schools of smelt and the salmon that are feeding on them. I can also pick up the thermocline when it sets up.

If you don't need the bells and whistles of the Lowrance and want a good inexpensive unit the Garmin will be a good choice.

I have the 240 blue. Yes you can tell the difference between bait fish and fish. The baitfish show up as clouds. I think it is the best unit you can but for the money. Note: you only nee the blue version if you will be going into deep water over 100 feet. If noit get the regular version. The 160 is the same unit with lower pixels. try consumermarine.com give them a call and they will beat anyones price.....good luck....joe
