I am installing a Minn Kota electric on the bow of my outrage and want to properly attach motor to boat. I have searched the posts here and find what seems to be the most logical procedure is to drill through the gel coat and glass, then hollow out a small area, install a stainless toggle bolt and fill with epoxy. Do I have this right? Comments and suggestions please. I then want to fasten a wooden block I have made up to the boat, then lag down the Minn Kota quick disconnect plate to the wood.

John, You've found the correct method. Sadly, Whaler did'nt anticipate bow-mounted trolling motors and failed to put wood pads inside the forward gunwale decks of the 18'. At least the wood locating diagram makes no mention of wood being there. Odd thing is the Montauk, as I recall, does have wood pads on each forward corner that can be used to anchor a troll. Go figure. Good luck. |

I stopped at West Marine and they pretty much reinforced the procedure, except, instead of the toggle bolt, just drill into the epoxy/high density filler mix and thread a machine screw into the drill hole. They have the procedure in one of their little repair manuals. |
