I have a 48 hp Johnson with tilt lift on my 15 Sport CC. The boat will be moored in salt water. Do I need to apply any special protective coatings to the motor brackets and tilt motor? Is a motor bracket anode sufficient protection? Advice appreciated.

I assume you already have have bottom paint on the hull, but not the motor bracket, correct? If so, you will need to paint the motor bracket with a special tin-based antifouling paint made for outboard lower units & motor brackets. There are several brands, it comes in spray cans, in black, white, or clear (what I use). I would suggest getting a kit which includes the clear primer they reccommend. You can get this from West Marine, Boaters World, etc. You will need to draw a waterline where you want the paint to stop, and sand or scuff the paint on the motor bracket below this waterline. Follow the directions on the kit. Do not paint the zinc annode. This stuff works pretty well and isn't hard to apply.

Barnacles & growth will occur faster on your motor bracket than they will on an unpainted hull, so you definitely need to do this. Use this special tin paint, as conventional (copper based) bottom paints are not appropriate for painting your aluminum motor surfaces...the metals will react & cause galvanic corrosion.

Thanks for the heads-up, John.
