Personally, I've never laid eyes on an inboard/outboard whaler. The price sure seems reasonable provided it is in good running order.
188 HP should be plenty of power but like I said, I'm not real informed. The 135 outboard pushes my 18 just fine. The concern I'd have would be stern weight and the particular transmission/outdrive it uses. If it's upgraded to an alpha one (no transmission)the it might be a nice set up. 4.3 V6 or 2.5 4cyl? I'm sure the others familiar with the set up will correct me.

The seller told me is a 4 cyl engine. It is problably the original setup from factory or maybe was sold for commercial use. |

Merc made two versions of the 188hp I/O. One is the Merc 888 which had a 302 Ford....I HOPE this is not the engine since, with everything bolted together, the engine (not counting the outdrive) weighs over 1100lbs!!! The other is a 4-cylinder....mebbe a 2.8L Chevy block?... at about 1/2 that weight. I have never seen an Outrage with an I/O but I do believe the GTX's came with them as one of the power options....Can anyone confirm this? Anyway, the power should definitely be enough since 188 hp is 188 hp. However, an I/O will not have the spunk of an outboard basically due to the extra mass that is has to push (it's own!!!)On the plus side, if you wanted more power, there are a number of bolt-on goodies that companies like Holley or Edelbrock make for these engines. I'm not going to tell you how much power I've seen come out of the street versions of these engines but I will say that I've seen a 4-banger Baretta destroy a SVT Mustang! (Large bore throttle body injection, oversized pistons, cam, exhaust, supercharger, etc.) |

If my memory serves me right the Merc 188 HP 4 banger is based on 1/2 of a Ford 460 block and was built by Merc. No alternator, it has an internal stator. It was a good engine but it can now be very expensive to repair.Dick |

I'm not aware of an 18 Outrage I/O, but Whaler did make a ski boat model called the GTX, using the 18' hull. With the added weight of the I/O, the boat is not self bailing. No experience with performance. |

The I/O is probably not the ideal setup for fishing, but people use them, and 188 hp is plenty. Our GTX has 260 hp, and it goes about 40 mph (speedo, not GPS). I do pay attention to the bilge pump, and to fuel lines, wiring, etc. under the cowling in fear of fire. I have a trolling motor bracket on the swim platform in case it won't start, but it's never stranded me yet. |

Hi, guys Thanks for all the input. I did not like the boat, in this 18' the engine takes too much space leaving little room to fish. The more I look and look I think I am better off buying the new 170 Montauk. |

That would be a perfect boat for the new cummings/mercrusier 1.7 diesel! |

Frankly, that thing sounds like it'd be more at home on a Monster Boat circuit, if they had such a thing. You know, a big heavy over-powered I/O Whaler stompin' around and sinkin' other Bayliners, SkeeDoos and the like, throwin' fire and smoke in the air all the while. Would seem t'have little other purpose. Could be a HOOT! |

188hp? If its a 4 cylinder and freshwater cooled, its the 3.7 liter, 1/2 of a ford 460, cast iron head with a mercruiser designed aluminum block. Hence the absolute need for freshwater cooling. The motor has lots of torque and gets good economy. Usually these motors are rated at 165 or 170 hp, you may have discovered a rare one with the 4 bbl carb. The last years of this motor were 1988- 1989 and by then it seemed like mercruiser had finally gotten the cooling system right and worked out other problems. I have had customers that swear by this engine and others that solely swear at it. IMHO I think Whalers look "right" with an outboard. Brian |

CJ, no doubt, some likes 'em big an' hot, thanks be t'God! But the main poipose o'life for a 18' CC, in mah simple-minded woild, is t'fish on. With that li'l cockpit 'bout half filled up with the I portion o'that big I/O, it would seem a crazy way t'power that partic'lar rig. Some may tink you is speakin' in tongues, back there, but Ah got ever' woid. You gots kin over here, or you just a transplant t'peanutland, youself bein’ from God’s original back yard o’south Louisiana? |

Hooter-My kinfoks put th' po in Napoleonic. We put the chickn in th' Kingfish' pot; cried at his drunken foolery. I sold Cokes at the stadium and watched Paul Dietzel roll out the Chinese Bandits, and marveled at Billy Cannon's early fakery. We re-read the Times-Picayune on Mondays, and lived in dread of swimming in flood with the snakes finding us as high ground in the River. But truly I was raised on the other side of the water, in the "great and sovereign" state of Mississippi. No regrets; wonderful, rich time in a blessed but troubled land. |

this boat could be a prime candidate for an outboard engine bracket re-fit. Could you pass on more info about the location and phone # etc...? |

I HAVE OWNED A STARCRAFT MONTEO BAY SKI BOAT FOR 19 YEARS NOW. IT HAS THE 302 MERCRUISER 188 H.P. INBOARD/OUTBOARD 888 IN HER. SHE HAS PLENTY OF POWER, I CAN PULL UP 4 SLOLOM SKIERS AND TWO KNEEBOARDS AT THE SAME TIME. I ALSO HAVE A STAINLESS STEEL MICHIGAN SKI PROP WHICH IS SWEET AND A HYDROFOIL STABALIZER WHICH MAKES HER PLANE DOWN QUICKER. I GREW UP ON SOUTH HOLSTON LAKE IN BRISTOL, TN. MY FATHER RAN A YAUCHT CLUB FOR A WHILE AND HAVE HAD 7 BOATS, NONE COULD HOLD A CANDLE TO "CHRIDTY". I HIGHLY RECOMEND THE MOTOR AND LOWER UNIT. M.S. ROWLETTE BRISTOL, TN. |

I am also under the assumption that the 188 is a ford 302 and the 470 are usually a 165-170hp inline 4. |
