Well, I finally did it, I picked up my 4-stroke 5hp merc today and it looks great! They had it set up in a demo tank and it really ran smooth. You could cut way down on the RPMs, it was really impressive. I'm planning to run it through my filter on one tank. I should be set up in about a week It looks like I'll be sick very soon... :) I just want to get it on the water and get a few numbers on it before the start of summer...

Thanks for all who have helped me in making this decision!

Dave, what boat did you put your kicker on ?
5 hp isn't going to push much of a boat.
If it's bigger then a 15', I doubt you will be happy.

5 is plenty on a 17ft. 4.5 is plenty also. 6 is the most. Any more and you won`t be happy because of the weight factor. Steve

Sal,

It's on a 1989 Newport. After doing a lot of research on this board and talking with several people about kicker size, I came to the conclusion the 5 hp was the right engine for me. I didn't want to load up the transom and wanted to go 4-stroke. I'm looking forward to getting it out on the water in a few weeks to give it a go. Hopefully I'll be able to post some numbers when I do.

Have a great day!

Hey Dave, how is the kicker doing?

If you have any difficulty starting your kicker, check the fuel line on your primary motor. If it looks like the primary has "sucked a vacuum" in the kicker's fuel line you can install a simple valve to isolate the primary motor.

Enjoy the new kicker - they're great to have.
