Of course I've had gradual increases in the cost of my hobbies throughout my life. But this is getting out of hand. Skateboards when I was younger, bmx bikes, etc.

Then I took up fly fishing. Not that expensive when I started, but after "The Movie" came out, it became trendy and costly. Easy to drop $300 plus on just a rod, and bonefish guides aren't cheap, either.

Then came boating. Numerous little boats didn't seem too bad. However, then came the Revenge and the restoration began. I figured there couldn't be another hobby that I could get into that would cost more.

Oh, then I got my pilot's license. You think maintenance on boats is expensive? Just talk to someone who owns a plane. I did, ignored them, and started looking for one anyway.

Thankfully, my wife intervened. She has always supported my hobbies (she even started flight training, but gave it up when she got pregnant), but she got a little nervous when I started getting serious Cessna fixations.

So, to placate me (and secretly, herself), today we have being delivered a brand spankin' new Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic, a dream I've had for over ten years. Nothing to add to that since it's brand new, right?

Just ask any Harley owner.

I'm doomed. And she wants a bigger boat.

I am reminded....

You can tell the men from the boys by the size (or price) of their toys.

And....

He who dies with the most toys wins!

Congrats on the hog!

An I thought that a boat was a hole in the water where you pour money.

And I am now thinking about an Citabria or a square-tail Skylane....

Hey Caddis,
It stops when you stop buying toys :)
I had the chance earlier this year to get a Harley and blew it.
My wife is a mortgage closer and was closing a couple who were taking some of their money and getting a brand new Harley. They got my wife so revved up she emailed me to meet her at the dealership and pick out my new Harley.
Unfortunately I didn't strike while the iron was hot.

Harley? Harley? No, no, gentlemen. The ultimate is a Ducati...

I actually prefer Beemers, but I couldn't find one with a tow rating sufficient for my 13. Also, backing down the ramp would be a might tricky.

As a fireman, I am able to buy a special eddition Harley Road King. It uses the same red/orage paint thatg Pierce uses for its firetrucks, and comes in with a thank you rebate from the factory of $1000. I just about have my wife talked into it. But she sure likes the new BMW K1200GT. Oh well.

As far as expenisve hobbies go, I would list woodworking right up there. It may not seem like it, but the buck can reall add up fast. Not to mention the cost of wood!

Brian:

Buy that bike! I've seen them on the Harley website, and they rock.

Harley and Ducati are separate entities to me. Ducati would be my second choice, if I were interested in that style of bike.

It's a good thing my brother-in-law is in town, because my wife would have us at the Bay Area boat show looking at a 27.5 Conquest if he wasn't.

In today's paper there's a story about Bill Bennett and his relatively expensive hobby, gambling...only lost $8,000,000 so far, the writers claim. Bennett is "unavailable for comment at this time."

But the kicker that I loved...one casino owner discounted the losses and said, "Hey, he's into gambling...it could be yachts."

It stops when you run out of money I guess?

Dang! What the heck does Bill Bennett do for a living anyway? I know he's wrote a book or two and serves as a pundit from time to time but, you have to be making some pretty good sratch to support that hobby.

Ah gots a hobby you might never tink of. Be a tool guy f'Habitat f'Humanity. No kiddin'. Spent most o'today and yest'day woikin' on another house for and with some good folks. Gives you a good reason t'buy all the pow'r tools you might desire and a great place t'put 'em t'use. And if you make a boo-boo, typically ain't nobody gonna yell at you. Friggin' wind's too strong t'fish for another couple weeks anyway, the garden's been in f'months, and it'll keep you out o'Momma's hair a day or two a week. Tink about it, ok? Consider this a advertisement and a recommendation, all together.

I've alays wanted to do that but first I have to finish my own habitat.

I saw a cartoon on the wall at a boat yard on Martha's Vineyard. It shows a lady standing in the cabin of her boat. There is water up to her knees and somebody is handing her a fistfull of money. The caption reads:

"The fifties aren't working, try the hundreds!"

Doobee,

Your cartoon reminds me of the old quip about the definition of sailboat ownership:

It's like standing in an ice-cold shower with all your clothes on tearing up hundred dollar bills.

Woodworking is my other hobby and over the past 2 years I have put my shop together. I am sure that the wife would not understand the money spent setting that up.

Speaking of sail boats, I have sailed and enjoyed it very much.
At the marina we screen all requests for moorage. If it is a sail boat we are full. We want power boats that need service rather than free air.

I ride a Hondas but have ridden many bikes over 30 years. The best part is just having the time and a few friends to share riding with. The whaler times seem to be more focused as a family day. Enjoy the new bike!
