We have heard all about Richard Fisher and Bob Doughtry but who is in charge of Whaler's marketing, particurly their yearly product brochure. It seems like there is an individual behind the wording of those product brochures. I have stoped in at the local Whaler dealer here in Baltimore MD to get a copy of the brochure sence 1995. In every yearly issue the wording is similar. Changed slightly from year to year, but follows the same theme. Wordings like "absolutly unsinkablble, foam filled unibond construction, remarkable laterial stability and dry ride," and always talks about the legend stories. Who ever writes the brochures is sure trying to uphold the Whaler tradition.

You ought to read the older brochures, which were probably written by Mr. Fisher, then compare them to the current ones. The "classic" Boston Whaler literature contained complete sentences, and was often rather wordy. The structure of the sentences was usually complex, with compound sentences and subordinate clauses being the norm.

The current brochures are often written in sentence fragments and marketing speak.

Here are some examples:

"An accomplish unlike any other boat on the water."

"Which is as amazing as some of the stories that built the legend."

The key to interpreting the new brochures is to watch lot's of CNN and learn to communicate in "sound bites" ;-)

When the plant was located back up east, they used for years, an advertising agency that was located near them. Whaler was probably their major client. When I was contacted for a quote that appeared in one of the catalogs, the owner of the firm was the one who called me directly. I had to sign off on the quote. I'll check my records and post the name.

The brochure for my 1970 Nauset describes how to time your shrimp trawl by counting how many beers you drink... gotta love that

In the early 80's, the advertising firm was:

Mullen Advertising in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts.

The font on the letterhead was same style as the Whaler logo.

Um....1984. Had to look at the "Boston Whaler Catalog Collection" CD from our own Tom Clark.

Cover page. Suprised the hell out of me, btw.
