Just got a 1990 Montauk yesterday. Looks like a time capsule. Original owner. Used a couple times of year for the first 4-5 years, then languished in their garage. Washed and waxed after each use. Had not been used for the last five years. 1990 Yamaha 90. Looks like it was fresh out of the box. I can't imagine the motor has over 100 hours. The seller had drained the gas, replaced the carbs and fuel lines, replaced the water pump, changed the fluid in the gearbox and installed a new battery. He was concerned about it sitting up so long and wanted it to be ready for new owners. Took it out today and went through the breakin procedures. Runs like a top. Continues my tradition of getting a whaler on Mothers Day.

Congrats on your new ride, sounds like a keeper. What other Whalers have you owned? Happy Whalin'!

1998 11' Tender purchased in new condition Mothers Day weekend 2001

1984 Harpoon 6.2 (20') Mothers Day 2002 - planned to learn how to sail but never had the time.

2000 Montauk - Memorial Day 2002 - too nice to turn the kids loose on.

1990 Montauk - Mothers Day 2003

This one is the keeper. No plans to buy, sell or trade. My wife told me in no uncertain terms that the backyard project boatyard is going to be closed and cleared. It was the deal I made with her prior to getting my ultimate project boat. 1976 Jim Smith Tournament 40. Today I am going to Miami to order the new engines and start the ball rolling on some deck repair and tower estimates. I had planned to look at 15's and 17's from here to Miami, but found this one in my own area.

I went through 10 boats in the last year before settling on these two.

Do you think there's something special about buying on Mother's day? Are the sellers more motivated?

I think that selling is better just prior to a holiday weekend, but buying is better after. On the other hand, my wife is more apt to agree to a purchase prior to holidays.

In the case of Mother's Day, the tender was circumstance while the Harpoon was purchased as a Mothers Day gift. One of the silly rationalizations in this particular Montauk was to keep the streak alive.
