What motor shaft length do I need for my 13 ft. early 70's Bostom Whaler. The transom measures at 22.5 inches. Any advice on motors? Thanks.

Howdy, Karoox.

You need a long (20") shaft engine.

The measurement is vertical from the top of the transom, not along the transom surface.

Generally, if the hull has a cutout transom and a blue interior it uses a short (15") shaft. The Desert Tan interior hull, without the transom cutout uses a long shaft.

Howdy, Karoox.

Nissan engines are rebadged Tohatsus, just as Johnson 4 strokes are rebadged Suzukis.

They have a reputation for being very rugged, dependable engines and dominate the commercial watermen market in many parts of the world.

However, what makes a great engine for professionals is not always the one that recreational users prefer. Availability of dealer service is a concern of recreational users that rarely bothers the pros, who only want to be able to acquire parts to do any service themselves.

The Nissan is certainly a great value, but it does offer drawbacks. You might prefer an engine with widely available dealer service in your area.
