I have an opportinity to buy an older Whaler, but the information is sketchy. It's listed as a 1986 Guardian with serial number BWC5688BE686. I've researched the Guardian so I know it's the commercial model. I've done some picture comparison, and it appears to be an Outrage model 18-22 feet. It was owned be Department of Fisheries and is being sold less engine. My intent is to put it back to as original condition as possible. Any information on the Guardian would be appreciated.

Captain Ron -

Paste this url into your browser to read a recap of hull identification numbers (HIN) and Boston Whalers.

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q2

Looks like this boat is in fact an '86 model year, made in May of 1986. So they're not messing with you there. Interesting thing...my dad's Guardian has a 'G' after the HIN...his is an '84, so that might make a difference, but his goes like this; BWCXXXXM84G..so yours might, in fact be an Outrage - you can e-mail the HIN to Bob at Whaler if you're worried at all about the veracity of their claims.

The Guardian and Outrage hulls are nearly identical...easiest way to tell externally is by checking the floor...Guardians sometimes have a lot more hardware holding the deck in place than do Otrages because of the heavy-duty construction. (See a photo in cetecea for an example) Other differences: the Guardian hull is heavier because they used more material to reinforce the hull construction (also making the boat more durable for commercial use).

Hope that helps you out some...check the site - do a search for "Guardian" and you'll be suprised what turns up...also, there is a few Cetecea photos of guardians in various stages of restoration on this site, and a number of owners out there that can give you plenty more information than I.

For a photo of the additional hardware in the floor of the Guardian model.

Dave: Thanks for the information. Things are becoming clearer. I pick it up this weekend, so will have a chance to really go over it. This was a sealed bid sale, was told I was the highest bid by $55, so feel very lucky to get it. Selling rep felt that I got a great bargain, time will tell.

Good luck with your new boat.

The letter G in buckda's HIN has nothing to do with Guardian. All early HINs ended with a letter. The best way to Identify your boat is with the serial number which is stenciled in the splashwell or the bow locker area. Also if it is a commercial hull it will have a red dot on either side of the hull near the aft end.

Thanks for the clarification Doobee. I was not claiming that the "G" stood for Guardian - just observing that my dad's has it. Might be a coincidence. I'd always refer to the information contained in a reference article if it was available over someone's post...

Anyway..congratulations on the winning bid CaptainRon! - I'm sure you'll love your boat. The outrage design is a great hull design and I'm sure once you've restored it, she'll be a beauty.

Well it's sitting in the driveway. Thanks to C. Bennett from Boston Whaler for confirming that it was a 20' Guardian built May 1986 and delivered to Canada end of May of same year. I does also have the "red dot" after the Whaler logo. My wife , my neighbours and my dogs are all shaking their heads in disbelief. The boat is basically complete but does need work. A survey was done and indications were that there were 2 spots that do have water inside the hull. After checking on this site, out came the drill. We have a local boat repair expert who came over for our "initial consultation". He was very upbeat which lifted my spirits as well. He saw no problems in putting her back to original condition. He is familiar with the repair process for the Whaler. The deal is I'll drop it off in the fall and he'll work on it over the winter. My plan is to take pictures along the way and post if anyone is interested. I'll move this discussion to the Repair forum now that I'm into that stage. Thanks to all who assisted with the identification and steered me in the right direction. This site has proved invaluable for answering my myriad of question. Still lots more to come re. power, trailer etc.
