Anyone using the Garmin GPS 180? I found one used with the chip I need for $350.00. I am wondering is I should pass and go with a Garmin 176 which new runs $445.00 or 530.00 for color.(Plus chart 145ish) Has the technology changed that much?

I would offer $300, but a good deal anyhow. I had the 180 on my previous boat and it's a great little unit. I now have the 176c, and while I love the color and everything else it brings to the table, there are many things about the 180 I miss, such as the bigger buttons and screen.

I don't believe that the 180 was WAAS enabled. The 162 is and would only cost about $400 new (plus chart).

While I love my Garmin, the Eagle IntelliMap 320 looks like a nice unit for only $350. http://www.eaglegps.com/

John,I still have my Garmin 48. I like having a handheld and it serves my needs well.If I have power problems with the boat,I'll always can go with it's own battery power. And with a handheld VHF,which I have for a back-up, I'll always be in touch! Plus the added bonus...to take it home with you.....If it ain't there,it can't be stolen! John, remember Skip? He had the 17' Angler tied-up in back of you. He now has a new boat. A 20' Key West W/A. Someone stole the "chip" to his GPS/Chart-plotter! By the why, Did you get your "bottom" wet yet?

The 180 is a good machine and very easy to use, but the new bluechart technology is superior. They provide more info and they're easier to read. Also the 180 does not have WAAS. The 176 sounds like a better value.

If I bought a boat that had a 180 aboard, I'd probably use it for a while, then make the upgrade to color. If I were going to the trouble of installing a GPS, I'd buy the newest, most advanced model in my price range.

That way, in a couple of years, I'll have the equivalent of what the 180 is today!)

Thanks for the replys. I think I will go with a new unit. The 176 seems to fit my needs.

Jay, I went in last Thursday and broke in the new motor Friday. I took a cruise by Smith Cove around 4:00pm. I am still trying to figure out the best angle for the trim at various speeds as the old Johnson 88hp did not have T/T. I saw in the Gloucester Times that someone caught a 45# stripper off of Kettle Island with live bait. I hope we get some good weather soon.

John, Try this: Once your on plane, start tilting-up the engine. You will feel and hear a difference. If you have a tach.,throttle down to the point that you are just about to loose plane. Then re-adjust your trim to maintain plane.Keep doing this until you find the proper angle and rpm's. From then on it will soon become second nature. Hope to see you this weekend. depends on the weather and doing yard work!
Jay
