According to the Coast Guard web site, one of the requirements for getting a safety sticker, if you have a built in gas tank, is as follows:
"Boats with closed fuel tank compartments built after 1 August 1978 must meet requirements by displaying a "certificate of compliance." Boats built before that date must have either natural or powered ventilation in the fuel tank compartment."

I am sure that my '93 OR 17 has no such display. Do some of the Whalers with built in tanks have anything like this? On my cockpit floor, just behind the RPS, there is a small rectangle of smooth gelcoat molded into the non-skid that looks as if it might have been for a sticker of some sort - could this be for a missing compliance sticker?
Alternatively, there is a small sticker on the port side, inside edge of rail, above the quarter seat cushion, that is no longer legible, but seems to refer to the gas tank. It is just below the gas filler plate. Anyone know what this actually says?

If I should have a compliance sticker, are they still available?
Thanks to all,
Mike

The compliance sticker should be attached to the fuel tank, generaly near the fuel level sender.

It would be most helpful if you cite a particular website ("the Coast Guard web site") that you include the Uniform Reference Indicator (URI) for the material you are citing.

When quoting federal regulations is is always best to include a citation of their source, too.

msullivan006,

I highly doubt that any CG Auxiliarist will decline you a safety sticker because you don't have a "certificate of compliance" sticker for your fuel tank. I have personally done at least a couple hundred boardings, as a Coastie, and I have never seen this sticker. Well, I probably have seen it but wasn't looking. If you do have one, it's probably where Dick suggests it is, on the fuel tank its self. Also, I just checked my Boarding Officer Job Aid and guess what, it does mention a sticker. My suggestion is to check your fuel tank like Dick suggested and if it's not there, don't worry too much. You'll more than likely still get a sticker.
Sorry I don't have the typicaly CW black and white answer.

phatwhaler out.

ps: where you looking at this site?

If i'm not mistaken, that only pertains to inboards where the engine is inside a compartment, not outboards where the engine is outside the boat.
How in the world would you put an electric fan under the floor in a Boston Whaler ?, theres no way.
It's always been that way for inboards not outboards.

I was referring to the same site as Phatwhaler posted, www.cgaux.org/cgauxweb/public/pubframe.htm . I was caught a little off guard by the wording which reads to me as if it does apply to all boats with closed tank compartments, since I had always assumed that ventilation requirements applied only to inboards. As I read the referenced rules, there are separate statements for inboard gasoline engines and for closed gas tank compartments. It could just be the way that the author has summarized the actual regs. I am not concerned about not having a compliance statement, but will check under the access plates and let you know if BW does put such info on the tank as Dick suggests.
Thanks for the input.

Because that website uses frames, the URI given does not point at any material associated with the topic being discussed in this thread.

Perhaps you can provide the URI to the frame by using the broswer option to open the frame in a separate window.

This would give the real URI of the frame and thus we could finally see the information you have been talking about from the start of this thread.

My browser skills are pretty weak, I guess, but this URI should be OK. It is under the "Free Boat Safety Checks" button on left of screen in originally cited URI. Ventilation info is at Item # 6 of the checklist.

Sorry to be confusing.
