My wife, brother, sister in law and the dogs will be making the Florida Panhandle our port of call over the holiday weekend. We will be launching Hooked Online" out of Spring Warrior Creek, Perry, Fl. Fishing and crusing and diving. Hope to see a few of you in that area too. Where will you be? Let us know and we will be able to keep an eye out. Mike

Hi Mike, If you happen to get really lost, maybe we'll see you here in Puget Sound. I'll be out crabbing in my Montauk, maybe some wakeboarding too, I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. ;) Ray |

Hey Ray,Thanks again for all your advice with the motor. I got talked into tearing my Mercury down this morning and found out that the damage was less severe than anticipated. It had one damaged piston/ring. I'm taking the block to be machined Monday morning and expect to be crabbing as well in the Puget Sound this fourth of July (if everthing goes back together as expected). |

While I hope not to get blown that far off course, you can keep your eye out for my cousin aboard the "Honky Tonk" a 30 foot Grandbanks. He will be sporting a Mainers Cap and tossing back a Riner Beer.On the gulf we will be scalloping, fishing for trout, kings, and black bass. Mike |

Hey WGF, I'll be in the Destin area for the Fourth and plan to mostly cruise but would like to chase some tail too....errrr speckled and spotted of course! Will have the Revenge on her maiden voyage in BLUE water (only pretty green so far in SoLa). I've heard good reports from folks that hit the wrecks out of Destin Pass for snapper, grouper and ling (16 mile) but haven't gotten enough info yet. Can you recommend a resource for this?(Tackle, guides that will go on your boat etc.) Dumb question but are you referring to the freshwater variety of bass or a local name for another? Thanks! |

spotsnspecks I have answered most of your questions in detail by email. As to fishing reefs in the area get yourself a chart of local waters from the BassPro Shop or other angler's supply when you hit town.Scallop season opens on July 1st but I am not sure of the boundy in that area or local rules...so ask around and get local info. If you can try it out...lots of fun and the best time to spot them is when the sun is high and it's also a good way to cool off. Don't forget your mask, snorkel and fins. Have a Happy/Safe trip. It has been awhile since I checked in, lots of new faces or names showing up here and I'm glad to see some of the old ones still here keeping the ranks. I'll be working my 24 hr shift on Engine-1 and my guess is we will have our hands full all-day and night...Oh yeah the boat, 22' OR. it's still in the works. Thought I would be in by the 4th, but due the crappy spring we had and my reluctance to deal with any more west.( I'm up to about 8 gals so far). Things have been a little slow this season. Oh well. We're likely to be fishing off of Charleston (Oregon) or Winchester Bay. There are lots of salmon and crab to be caught! Alex |

Hey Budman, beautiful Lake Beulah indeed! Purchased my 15' Striper from a former resident of the lake. Quite possibly the highest Whaler population per capita on that lake, period. Must be more than 20.I'll be just up the road on Spring Lake, WI, sipping Pabst from the tap and praying that I'm not the only expendable young male around to launch fireworks. Cheers to you! |

Is anyone going to be out in Lake Worth, Fl near Peanut Island? Its the best place to be on a boat because to the south of you, you can watch Palm Beach fireworks. To your north you can see Lake Park's fireworks and to the west you can see West Palm Beach, you cant beat watching 3 towns of fireworks at once now can you?! Just a warning though, beware of the crazy drunks, turn your nav. lights on and BE SAFE! Hehe this coming from a teenager directed towards all. |

The nice thing about being retired is that I can go out fishing during the week and am able to avoid the drunks, horsepower freaks in their thunder boats and the crotch rocket (PWC) drivers who think the flats in Tampa Bay are just the place to raise Hell, even though they are "No internal combustion engine" zones.Home on the dock during the day and later quietly motoring down the canal to a small cove to anchor and watch the fireworks without the bedlam:-) Have a happy and safe holiday and remember what it stands for. Well, I'm Back...Home that is. It was a short wet trip and a broken motor. I put the ole gal in the water and fired her up. All was going great, except the rain. Put her in reverse and made a turn to point my baby to the dock and pushed her into foward gear and gave her a little gas and well...it was about then I knew I had a problem. The old gal didn't seem to get the message and sorta just set there. No, it wasn't the foward gear...the motor just didn't seem to have any power. I pushed the ole single Morse to the max and noting. All I heard was that sinking feeling in my gut telling me...this is going to be a bad day. I spent the day going through the ABC's of outboard repair. New gas, new fuel line and connectors, clean out fuel pump, blow out carbs, drain bulbs, kick dog, cuss wife and last but not least...pack up , load up and head home. So...who was it that asked..."Where will you be on the 4th of July" anyway? Mike |

We went diving out of Monterey, and it sure seemed like there were a lot of once-a-year boaters and once-a-year boats out on the water. They were sure doing some dumb things. One of them managed capsize off Point Pinos the morning of the Fourth. From the VHF traffic, three people in a 13' tri-hull (could even have been a whaler). Dunno how they managed to capsize, it was pretty flat in the morning (Afternoon was another story). Anyway they got picked up by somebody and their boat was still floating when we started the dive. And we have new form of launch ramp turkey in Monterey. Somebody has started an amphibious truck tour operation using an updated version of the WWII DUKW. These guys thing think they own the ramp which is not supposed to be used for commericial operations. They want people to move their boats off the courtesy dock so they can launch the big noisy stinky beast. Chuck

Better later than never...Out on Lake Charlevoix, in Michigan. On the 4th, there were three Whalers in "port" here on Lake Charlvoix. Too many people here to fish out the Whalers from our host's friends. Great weather, and I won't go on and on and on. Did not see lhg, but if I see a classic Outrage with twin Mercs I will wave. Took our little 15 up to Fishermans Island yesterday, our one trip to the "Big Lake". Rest of the time will be out in Lake Charlevoix. Be here through the 8th... sub |

Summary of Fourth of July weekend boating:2 July. Picked up the tow vehicle from tire dealer. Four new tires, rather expensive extra load version. 3 July. Picked up boat from storage yard. Paid summer storage bill. Parked in front of house. Trailer brakes seem not to work. 4 July. Temperature is 90-degrees by 10 a.m.--too hot to work on boat. Thunder storm rolls through, very strong winds and rain. Boat cockpit fills with pine needles and other windborn vegetation debris, rain water. Huge limb breaks off tree near house. Winds70-MPH. Limb just misses roof. Clean up cockpit after storm. Install batteries. Install new steering wheel. Discover helm pump in hydraulic steering is out of fluid. Where did that go? 5 July. Turn the water back on for outdoor faucet. Start to clean up boat from winter in storage. Thunder storms roll though, heavy rain. Boat cockpit full of new debris, new water. Boat sitting on trailer and slopes the wrong way so cockpit does not drain well. 6 July. More thunderstorms coming. Refill hydraulic steering and bleed. Extremely heavy rains in mid-afternoon. Boat cockpit fills with more debris and water. Bail out and clean up for third time this weekend. 7 July. Will take boat back to storage yard and try again next weekend. Net work accomplished on boat: list of things to fix increased instead of decreased. |

My 4th,1. Begged my dad all morning to drive me to pick up a boat the was offered to me for free. 2. After a few beers he agrees to take me to "look at it" and he says that it will be up to him if it is going to be parked in "his" yard. 3. After looking at it and a lot more begging and a few more cold ones out of the cooler in the truck he says that he'll let me keep it in the yard. 4. We drive back to our house and take my 11' whaler off the trailer and pull the trailer to where my "free" boat is. 5. Load the boat on the trailer and pull it home. 6. Park the old woody in the yard. 7. Wash my new toy down and see what she looks like clean. 8. Look at my new toy and smile :) 9. Take up the floor boards and fish the mice out of it (old man don't know about that) 10. Go inside because I was sick of working on the boat in the hot sun. Net work accomplished: Got an old wooden boat ( one of the one's that has seats like a car) and cleaned her up.

Jim, It sounds like a bad case of Murphy's Law. I had a case of it myself. I went to clean up my 13 Sport to show just incase I had a potential customer over the weekend from my local add. The weather was either too hot or raining so I left it go. This morning I received a phone call at 7:00am and had a showing at 8:00am. I busted my buns for 1 hour and had it kind of ready. The person shows up looks at it for 2 minutes and says; "I'll take it". I didn't even have to start it. Go figure. Regards, Jay |
