Is it possible to install trim tabs on
a 17' Montauk? That area of the transom
is simply hollow and there doesn't appear
to have any backling to securely attach
the tabs. Any suggestions.
My Whaler is an 86 Montauk , with Bobs
Machine Shop jack plate and 115 Yamaha.
The trim tabs will improve performance in
the flats of Florida Bay.
A couple of local outboard shops that
specialize in flats boats and high performance
boats have suggested that there is not sufficient
backing to hold the tabs?

Razmataz,

I am Thomas and I work for Bennett Marine in the Client Services department.

Most likely the screw retention for the mounting plates would be more than enough through the fiberglass/resin combination, but if you want a little more insurance then you could always drill out the mounting holes and pack the area with a filler (MarineTex). Of course, you would need to dig out to the sides of the holes, so the filler would form a plug behind the fiberglass skin and spread the load over a broader area (just like a backing plate).

Please feel free to contact me at trimtabs@earthlink.net if you have anymore questions.

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas
