I read alot on this forum about whalers on the Great Lakes. I enjoy hearing about people and their whalers from everywhere but id like to hear from anyone who enjoys their whalers on the water of New Jersey. Whats you favorite Jersey fishing spot and what fun activites can i enjoy on my Montauk. I boat and fish in LBI. Id like to hear from other Jersey Whalers!

LBI=Long Beach Island...immediately to the south of Barnegat Inlet.

I launch my 1964 Sakonnet into the Cohansey River and proceed out into the Delaware Bay. Brigantine and its surrounding bays used to be my primary fishing grounds when most of my family still lived there, but that island has been ruined by the casinos and all they bring with them.

I am from Harvey Cedars and spent my entire life in the marshes from Ship Bottom to Barnegat(mainland). Also lived jumping 6' breakers in the inlet and hanging on the sandbar which is no longer.

We run out of, well, North Beach on LBI. Spent part of the afternoon on Sunday at island beach, a huge site for boats to anchor up and hang out.

Boat lives on the causeway marina--where you?

My 170 Montauk is in the Raritan Bay area. I primarily use it to cruise and fish the Sandy Hook Bay area.

We spend our weekends in Wildwood Crest, NJ. I'm not a fisherman. I take the kids out tubing on Sunset Lake. There are several good restaurants to dock at in Cape May, Wildwood and North Wildwood. There's something special about taking a boat to go out to dinner. It's just not the same by car.

For the past few years I have been bringing my boat down to Avalon, NJ. I'm not renting a house this year due to my wedding but hope to again soon. I did some fishing in the back bays behind Avalon, Stone Harbor and Wildwood. I love pulling up to Two Mile Landing for dinner with the boat. I hear ya Dave on the restaurants. Just something about arriving on a boat.

I also go out on the Delaware River near Neshaminy (15 mile north of Philly). I guess that could be considered Jersey boating as well. I can usually get out for a few hours after work right around sunset. Water is calm and around Philly you get the lights from the city and the bridges, the Camden Aquarium and the battleship New Jersey. Great stuff, especially after the sun sets.

Chris, how's the boating near LBI. I have only been up "north" once or twice and never with the boat.

Mike

ps Dave, I may be down in the Villas this weekend with the Whaler. Where's Sunset Lake?

Fish in Great Bay with the 13' BW and go out of Little Egg Inlet to fish the ocean in a 23' SportCraft. Plan to take the ICW north in the new BW to do some sightseeing in Little Egg Bay this summer.

My 170 is very happy in Beach Haven (LBI). The boat is great for the bay and drags me out kicking and screaming through the inlet ( Beach HAven Inlet) on occasions. The club that we belong to, has one whole dock of whalers, ranging from the 11' to 21'. Besides a small Marshall catboat, the rest are Whalers of all vintages.

Have been boating/fishing out of the Raritan Bay and offshore since a child. Been away from saltwater boating since the late 1980's, but am picking up a new 150 Sport Whaler in two weeks. I anticipate fishing/cruising Raritan/Sandy Hook Bays and the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers. Down the beach on nice days, too.

I live in Manasquan, NJ and my Montauk is kept on the Glimmer Glass, a tributary off the Manasquan River. I use the boat on the river and hang out at Treasure Island. (Local lore is that the island, actually known as Osborne Island, inspired the novel Treasure Island when R.L.Stevensen spent a summer in Brielle, which is on the north side of the river.)I am not sure if I believe the story but since I write for a living it is cool to think about on a hot summer day. And the island is neat because it is large enough to explore and heavily treed so you lose sight of the water when you follow the trails.

Traffic gets very heavy on the Manasquan because the river leads to the Pt. Pleasant Canal and the northern entrance to Barnegat Bay. In the summer, most of my Whaler time is spent in the ocean.

There are three Whalers at my dock on the Glimmer Glass, including a new 150 Sport with a 60 hp Merc, a beat-up old 17 and mine. The old 17 with its taped over mushed rub rail has a brand new 90 Tohatsu, so between those engines and my Yamaha, it is like the League of Nations in outboards. What's cool is that the owner of the old 17 also owns a 31 Bertram and the Whaler sees more action because it is so much easier for him to use. That fellow wanted to buy my old Tashmoo before he bought his.

I have a number of friends on the Mansquan who also own Whalers, including a 22 Outrage and a 17 Sport. Four more friends who boat out of Shark River, six ocean miles north of Manasquan also have Whalers: Montauks and Newports.

I have done a lot of traveling but I always long to get back to my Jersey Shore.

We keep our 17 in Rumson. Primarily use it on the Shrewsbury and Navesink Rivers. A Newtauk showed up in the area recently, haven't had a chance to talk to the owner yet.

I've been fishing out of the Manasquan Inlet for years now and just recently (yesterday) started fishing from Shark River Inlet. Before my Whaler, I stayed within a stones throw of the inlet but now I find myself starting to stretch my legs. Took the Newtauk out yesterday and it was sloppy to say the least but it handled it great, as I was entering the inlet one gentleman entering told me how bad it was out there. After about an hour or two, things settled down but I was really impressed with the boat.

There are times I'll take the boat out of the Delaware River. In the past I'd take it out of Trenton but my plan this summer is to get a pass so I can launch it from Bordentown (closer to my house)...

Having just finished the restore of my 13', I have had it in the Delaware River. Have not fished yet. I am looking for spots now too.
Next week, I will take up to CT for a 2 week vacation in Old Lyme. Beachfront cottage rental(Long Island Sound). Can't wait. This is my favorite place for boating and fishing. It is where I caught the Whaler bug when I was 10 years old. In 1974, there were many Blue 13's around and I would take pictures of them and study the catalogs for hours like I was taking a test.

Mostly Barnegat Bay out of Seaside is where my Montauk is run. I do trailer it north to launch in Sewaren from time to time.

If you fish out of Barnegat Bay, join Ballbuster, and me over at http://www.bhweb.com/cgi-local/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi a site dedicated to fishing Barnegat Bay and the nearby Atlantic.

You will problably find Ballbuster out at Barnegat Ridge about now, and me sometime over the weekend. I hear that the fluke are getting active out there.

I trailer my Eastport and enjoy using in Barnegat Bay or the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers with an occasional run out to Sandy Hook bay. This time of year it's hard to get out without the promise of a tube ride for the kids.

I would like to give the Deleware River a try. Any recommendations for a good ramp?

MikeG,
Sunset Lake is north of the Cape May Bridge. Turn right after marker 471 and before 472 and you'll be facing Sunset Lake. If you follow it around you'll end up back at the Wildwood Bridge. Stay between the markers at low tide!

DanT,
I have used the Lamberton Street ramp in Trenton in the past. I checked it out a few weeks ago on an exploratory run, looks good. Two floating docks, good ramp, plenty of parking. Have NOT been there at peak times, however, and don't know how heavily it is used.
Could you suggest something non-threatening on the Shrews/Navesink? I don't want to scare the wife and daughter with any crazy ramp antics...I took them to the Atl.Highlands last Sunday, and they were a bit intimidated by the goings on there, as in 6 boats putting in/taking out simultaneously...
Thx,Tom

DanT,

I'd like to recommend the ramp in Bordentown. I was there for the first time today and must say I was impressed. Being the 4th, I thought it would be packed in, it wasn't. I guess it had something to do with the $10 ramp fee but it was well worth it for me. You can get a seasonal ramp pass for $100. We cruised down the river, fished and then decided to have lunch at a dock and dine place which was great and reasonably priced. It would have been nice to head down to Philadephia and see the NJ but we ran out of time. The only down side was the ramp opened at 9 and closed at 9...The ramp out of Trenton is open 24/7 and is nice, but being a public ramp, it gets packed during certain times of the year. My brother also recommended Neshameny althought I've never been on it before.

Email me if you want more information.

Good luck...

DaveS

I have a 1988 Montauk and launch in Pine Beach, fish the Toms River and Barnegat Bay, north and south. Also trailer the boat to Lake Champlain.

DaveS and tombro, thanks for the ramp recommendations. Tombro, I have the same concerns about launching at the Atlantic Highlands ramp when I'm with my wife or kids. The ramp I use on the Navesink is River Plaza Marina on Front Street in Redbank. It's a nice quiet single lane ramp with a floating dock. The marina is west of the Route 35 bridge.
The fee is 15$ and it is a bit of a haul if you plan on going out to Sandy Hook Bay but the Navsink is a nice river to boat on. Send me an email if you need more information.

Fish and boat in the ocean city area with a 97/17'/outrage. It is agreat area for boating, fishing and beaches. You can go south to strathmere and put up on the beach and walk and swim and sun. Also fish Great Bay with my brother-in-law in his 95/21'/outrage. Any one from Mistic Islands that fishes Great Bay in a whaler out there?

West Wildwood is homeport. Fish the D Bay and offshore waters off Cape May in our 27 Whaler. Grew up in Manasquan with a 13Sport and then Eastport, recently upgraded from 22 Revenge

My 22 Revenge spends its days bobbing in the Shark River. We ski and tube in the basin and fish outside the inlet chasing stripers up near the Shrewsbury Rocks or bottom fish on Sea Girt reef. With my recent re-power (to twin 140 Zuks) I'm planning a few off shore runs. I see also a couple of 22-25 outrages in the Shark River.
