I finally got to get out on the water here in Italy. Unfortunately, not in a Whaler. We rented a RIB made here in Italy. Seeing as you don't need a license for anything under forty HP that's what you get on a 17 foot rubber boat. In any case it was a beautiful day on Lake Maggiore which is near Milan. I managed to spot several 13's, two 15's a sport and a GLS,three Montauks, and a 20' Outrage on a ramp.

Yeah, me and the missuz spent some o' July over there. Thought we'd go beat the heat, but blew that outta the water with the biggest heat wave they've experienced since Dante's time! Found a li'l bit of cooler weather up on Lake Como in a li'l town called Verena, not much bigger than Iota, back home here. Surprized by all the friggin' Whalers on the water there. During the week in Verena we prob'ly saw a dozen of 'em, includin' a big new, like, 24' Dauntless, a couple Outrage 18's and a slew of li'l 13's.

Biggy, Ah ate mah friggin' weight in fresh "Bufalo" mozzarala over there, and bubba, that's a lot o' cheeze! Awesome people, friendly and helpful ever' where we went. Cain't say enough nice things about the Italians. Pity they hasn't been able t' teach the french or germans anythin' over the years, at least in the last 2000 years or so. Before the Romans came along, the germans were eatin' each other, wearin' hair coats and livin' in caves. Today, especially after some schoolin' by Generals Patton and Marshal, they're almost civilized. There's just no accountin' for the french.

Hooter- My grandmother lives in Florence. I appreciate your kind comments. Sorry you had to suffer the heat. fno- If you're still up there on Lago di Como, try the small town of Menaggio (just across the strip from Bellagio). Awesome spot, and quite a few Whalers to be seen. piu tardi.

Honey mooned in Tuscany in Nov 2000. Visited Florence,San Giamano,Pisa, Bologna,Venice,Siena and Rome. What a beautiful area. Loved the Chianti (no fava beans). The people were friendly and helpful. Read "Under the Tuscan Sun" by Frances Mayes before the trip. The Italians know how to live.

Actually, We're on Lago Maggiore which is right next to Como and about the same size. I found a nice chart last weekend that shows the depth in the middle to be about 1200' We took a swim in 600'of water about twenty feet away from the cliffs. I've been working over here off and on for the last 15 yrs. and I have never had a bad time in Italy. The last two years are the first that I've stayed for long periods of time. Thus the reason why I constantly miss those fantastic Florida get togethers. If and when I move here for a couple of years, I'll have to figure out how to ship the Whaler over.

Dear friends,

I live in Italy and i am also a classic whaler fan.
I have many nice pictures of a beautiful outrage 20 fully equipped for saltwater fishing in the mediterranean see.
It would be interesting to discuss about what mediterranenan fishermans look for when purchasing and equipping a boat.

If anyone is interested just reply to my message.

Ciao,

Paolo (Rome)

You Italians have good taste. Hardly ever see a Whaler here in Germany. I'm ready to go home, tired of these turd under the nose people. Sept 5 can't come soon enough.

Paolo, I can only believe that you have one of the best rigs for fishing here in Italy. How far do travel to fish and for what types?

Danny,

Just got back last week, and though we loved Holland, Belgium & N. France, it was great to be back. We only saw one Whaler, though we biked for four days next to rivers and canals in Holland, and then drove all over the place...finally saw a cute red-hulled 16/17 on the Seine in Paris.

Sorry Germany (or the Germans) didn't agree with you...I've been there several times over the past thirty years, and it ain't my favorite country, either, though I did enjoy a great Octoberfest in Munich in my wayward youth.

Thanks again for the invite several weeks ago to hook up...it just wasn't in the cards or in our travel plans. Maybe some other time at a rendezvous here in the States.

Regards,

Tony

Dear fno,

I use my both during the entire season, mainly in the middle tyrrenian see, exactly on the coast of Rome, where I live.

We are very lucky both for the mild weather and for the great oppurtunities for saltwater fishing.

Personally I like to practice the following techniques:
-live-bait trolling within 4-5 miles from the coast(red snappers, leerfishes, bluefishes, ambejacks...)
-deep see trolling around 5-10 miles away (bonitos, dorados, mackrels...)
-spinning close to the river from the boat (bluefish and Leerfish)
-spinning and flyfishing in bluewaters (little tuna, dorados...)
-bluewater drifting (bluefin tuna)
-...
...

I have a 1987 20ft outrage with a single Merc 200EFI and a 4 strokes 10 Hp kicker for trolling. Double controls mounted on the consolle for comfortable cruising during trolling.
"home made" live well on the stern, GPS and fish finder.

I am very satisfied about the performance of the boat especially after installed a couple of fixed trim-tabs.
Comparing to other similar boats I was impressed by the extremely dry cruise and the stability.
I previously owned another classic (1982 18ft outrage that was also very good).

Next step could be a 22ft WD with the same engines I actually use.

Ciao,

Paolo

Did you ever figure out who's boat was used in the italian job film?

I didn't watch the movie but only the promo.
I am sure it is a 22 classic outrage.
The main difference from the 20, besides the lenght, is the optional "super consolle" clearly visible in the promo.

Ciao,
Paolo

I was in Portofino in June this year. There had to be 20 13 foot classics, and 5 17 foot blue intereior classics moored side by side in the harbour. Every one was non smirked, meaning 1973 or earlier and every one was in great shape. There were few newer ones but there was one Newport that had been painted dark blue with a red stripe. It was yacht like in quality, and probably was originally painted for one of the 150 foot yachts in the harbour. A real site to see.
