I just purchased a 1981 Revenge. It's in fair condition but needs a little (okay, a lot of) TLC. Anyway, the gelcoat is the standard desert tan, but in some areas, it has peeled away to reveal a gray color. Could this be some kind of primer paint? Could it be a gray gelcoat underneath? Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Joe in Charleston, SC

It sounds like your boat's original gelcoat was painted over. Gelcoat will crack and shatter, but will not peel. Gelcoat is applied in a thicker layer than paint would be.

See if you can easily scratch through the gray(In an unobtrusive spot). My guess is that it is primer under desert tan paint.

Search around this site a little bit and you will come up with a lot of information on paint vs. gelcoat.

Hi charleston.

You also have to watch and see if it was painted, is it truely desert tan. Mine was painted that color with a brush, So I sanded it all off because it needed to get repainted bigtime.

If you are going to re-paint it, sand ALL of the paint off. Thats what I did and its wonderful. But it takes a long time and its an absolute must. Thank you

I suspect that you have a CPD boat that was haze gray when it left the factory. Someone has probably painted it desert tan.

I was told by the former owner that the boat was originally a US Customs vessel (He bought it at a gov't auction). Because of that, I believe that it may have left the factory with both a gray (underneath) and tan (overcoat) gelcoat. The gray cannot be easily scratched off. On the areas where there are chips, it appears that directly underneath the gray is the greenish fiberglass. I also looked for the 'circle' of gelcoat near the transom, and it is gray, which leads me to believe that it could be a commercial hull. Thanks for the help!
