Not really my 1st boat but actually my 3rd. It was however my 1st NEW boat and my 1st boat with a ton of good memories.

In August of 1983 my transom on my 1964 13' Whaler decided to let loose. My Dad tied it together from the ski eye to the Norman pin and we drove it to Hance & Smythe's Boston Whaler dealership across Barnegat bay. After hours of negotiations we took delivery of a leftover 1982 13' sport with a 35hp Johnson, Galvanized trailer, Mills mooring cover and a wraparound railing/backrest on back order. It was $2700 and my boat which came to about $4250 or so....NEW. I drove the boat home and was the happiest kid on LBI and could not actualy believe my father bought me a new boat, he must have had a really good month:). Anyway I drove that boat 8 hours a day 7 days a week for 4 years. I learned to kneeboard, waterski, jump waves, etc and probably racked up about 1000 hours on that 2 banger. I sold the boat in late 86 or early 87 to my neighbor for $4450. His kids drove it till about 1996 or so when the old 35 finally gave up the ghost and he repowered with a 40hp evinrude.

Last week I went to NJ to pick up my 20' Hydra-sports that me and Dad bought new in 1994 to bring it down to FL being my parents just bought a condo down here. I was over my bud's house and saw the little Whaler sitting in the water like it has since I sold it to Al all those years ago. I jumped the bulkhead to take a closer peak when I was rudely interupted by his neighbor's Pitbull charging at me through the screen door. Instinctively I jumped off the bulkhead onto the dock and the owner grabbed the dog before he came over the bulkhead after me. After appologizing and repairing her screen door, I made it over to the boat. The owner's friend was there and I asked if she was for sale and he said he thought it may be. I gave him my card and a little message that I would like to buy it back.

I got a phone call from Al the other day and he said the engine was not up to snuff and he wanted it to be fixed(fuel pump?) before he sold it. I returned his call today and said I would take it as-is and to let me know what he wants. I will see what gives when he returns my call but it sure would be neat to own that boat again. If things work out, I may name it "Knot for sale" because it would NEVER be again.

And the price will be interesting as well (to those of us with 82 13's that STILL have the 82 35s on them).

However the value to you is easy to estimate: For all of the memories, it is priceless.

tds

Even more so if you used your Mastercard.

Maybe they would even buy it on your behalf if you did a commercial for them.

In any event, it's a cool story.

Bigshot - a neat story indeed. Thanks for sharing the story with us. Those 13s hold many keys - I bought mine new in about '76 and then sold it in '96 and have kicked myself ever since. Thanks again ---- Jerry/Idaho

Talk about being unhappy for having sold my first Whaler, also a 13: It was a 1958, Whaler's first year, and hull number 11 (actually numbered with #110). Sold it in 1971, around Albany NY. Wonder what happened to it!

He called me yesterday and said shoot him an offer and he would run it by his mechanic friend....don't look promising but ya never know. The boat aint cherry and although structuraly sound she is about a 4 on a scale of 10. I don't think they have varnished or waxed it since 1986. It also has EVERY reistration sticker going down the side. No matter how much I compound, they will be there forever if ya know what I mean.

Did you offer him $1 like you said to so when the seller does not give a starting price?

Ps...when people won't gove me a starting price and ask for an offer, the old "Price is right" offer is always used......$1.[/quote]

Along same lines .... during mid-summer I was in local marina shipstore buying "whatever" to help keep "the fleet" afloat and in walked grandpa and and his grandson (approx. 8 or 9 yrs old). They proceeded to overpay for a pair of waterskis, which were going to be used for skiing from the little boat there at Grandpa's beach-house in Sag Harbor. Well ... if you could have seen the look on "little junior's" face as they walked from the store. Grandpa was THE coolest, bestest dude on the face of the earth !!
I said to the store owner as they walked out "he thought he just bought skiis .... he bought a memory" .... call it corny, but ... the first boat ... your first skiis behind grandpa's boat ... that stuff is (as the commercial says) "priceless" !!

No Ryan I did not offer $1 being I solicited the sale. I got your joke and am not offended, actually amazed you remembered it. I am 1200 miles away so hand to hand or Mano A Mano negotiations are not practical. I offered a fair price to get the ball rolling being I want to own the boat, not insult the man. Imagine asking a guy if he wants to sell his boat, he says he might be interested what would I want to spend and I said $1.....I just not only shut that door, I locked it. If I saw it on the side of the road with a sign on it and was told to make an offer then the price is right offer would be thrown at him. Being I am asking him to consider MY price, that is not the case. Buying and selling is not cut and dry and no text book can tell you how to make the best deal, experience is the key.

Ryan: I recalled exactly what you were talking about! I love a good attack!

Biggo pointed out the difference--this part. boat not for sale or being marketed.

Oh, now I see the difference.

Ryan- As a teacher, I am very impressed by your improvement in spelling and grammar. Many of your posts now have no errors- excellent! A+ !
Bigs- I hope you get it back. Overpay for sentimentality. Imagine 50 years from now- it will be worth it.

If it's in your heart to have THAT boat again, buy it! Not everything in life revolves around the best deal.
jws posted 09-27-2003 07:52 PM ET (US)     Profile for jws  Send Email to jws
Actually Big shot you already own it. The important part that is. The memories of the boat and the fun you had with it and friends. The memory of your father, his love for you and buying the boat for for you. Those are the things that really count in life and they are filed away in your brain. You own them completely. The boat is nothing more than the material component of something much more important. Don't get sentimental over material possessions. Give your Dad a call and tell him even after all the years how great it was to have owned that boat.

Bigshot......This is like remembering your college sweetheart. When you go back for a college reunion you take one look and think.... OH my God! I remember this beautiful girl with a great figure.....what happened.
