Does anyone have recommendations for a good marine surveyor located in the Cape Cod, Mass. area?

I would recommend Daniel Briggs. 508-758-9300. He is very qualified and has a lot of practical boat building experience. If you are surveying for insurance, you may also want to check with your insurance company to see if they have a recommendation. I find that many surveyors don't understand Whalers and try evaluate by the same standards as a single skin hull. Some will condemn a hull as waterlogged when the problem is just a failed drain tube. Some believe that boats built before "Whaler changed the foam" are suspect, when, in fact, there was no foam change. Before you choose a surveyor, try to determine what they know about Whaler construction, and whether or not they are biased.

Peter-Without a doubt, call Alan Roby from Allied Marine Surveyors in Plymouth, MA - (508)746-0436. You will probably get an answering service, but he will call you right back. He did a 28' boat last fall and a 34' last week. He spent a day and a half on the 34 and is incredibly thorough. He thumped every inch of the hull, tested for moisture, runs every system, etc., and he is very reasonable. He even called me back after the sale to check that everything went OK. Good luck with whatever you are looking at. Dan |
