I have a 1989 Montauk. Two questions. First, I am considering refinishing my original steel gas tanks with a hard coating (epoxy)and a new holding pad which would allow water to pass under the holder. The current original design keeps the bottom of the tanks wet and even afer repainting the tanks, pulling them out to refuel constantly scrapes the paint off. Any ideas? Second, the instrument panels need refinishing. Is there a plastic overlay to replicate the original? Any other ideas? |

What about mounting the gas tanks on top of something like this? http://duragrid.com/duragrid.html |

raypas1, I suggest you scrap the steel Tempo or Mirax tanks you have and upgrade to the aluminum Mirax tanks that are exactly the same configuration as you have now. You can leave the aluminum unpainted and never worry about scraping the paint off again. Steel tanks that are 14 years old are probably near the end of their useful life so the expense of the new tanks (c. $350) is not much more in the long run compared to fooling around with what you have and then replacing rem in a few years anyway. The covering on the console is a product called Mat-Tac. Use the search function to dig up many, many discussion of this product and where to get it. When I redid the console on my Montauk many years ago I just went to a local sign shop and bought square yard of a flat black vinyl made by 3-M which did not have as much texture as the Mat-Tac, but otherwise looked the same. It cost maybe $10. |
