I'm in the market for the new 2004 170 Montauk. This boat is available in my PNW local with Merc's new 90 Optimax (I'd definitely prefer the Opti over a 4-strk). My question is, due to the fact that the new hull is bigger and heavier (1400#), all things equal, won't the boat be slower than the older style at 900#s? Will it be a pig? You guys have a feel for this? I want to put a 115 Opti on it, but the dealers say "no way".

How fast do you want to go?

I have a 2003 170 and I think the 90 Hp is plenty fast. The hull does the work and I am always dry and smiling. I have yet to really WOT but I have seen consistant speeds of 39 with about 4200 RPM and 2 adults and the boat wants to keep going faster!

the motor plate only rates it at 90hp.

I have the 4 stroke and am glad I do.

p.s. the fish can out run me but not outthink me....

Trask, Look this over:

Search the Post Classic Forum on the newer boats. Lots of new 170 Montauk info there.
Also the Whaler catalog only refers to a 2 stroke (non Optimax) or an optional 4 stroke. I have not seen anything about the 90 Optimax yet on the 2004 Montauk. IMO neither configuration is a dog. In fact there is plenty of power. Jim

Barney,
I'll take a look at that link. Sea Ray in Fife, Washington (one of our local BW dealers) has had the Merc 90 Optimax on the 170 Montauks for a couple of weeks now. It's not yet in Whaler's brochure, but it's available. Not to bag on 4-strokes, but I'll always be a 2-stroke (especially Optimax) fan.

Trask, welcome to the forum.

I looked at the link Barney refered to, and Rodger (also a NW forum member) seems to be reporting very good speeds with the Merc 90 on his new 170.

It has been argued that the Merc classic 90 is conservative in claiming only 90 hp. It would be worth taking a test ride and checking the Opti performance against Rodger's numbers. If you can get 42mpg GPS, that's plenty. My older Montauk 17 with a 100hp does 43, and it pretty much seems to be flying.

If you look over the Cetecea page about Tabasco's 170, you will note in the follow up thread that he repowered with a 115, which he believes is the perfect engine for a 170. That's over the rated HP for the boat, which is why the dealer will not do it. Insurance might be an issue also.

If you decide to trade out the 90, you should have no problem selling it. I might even be interested.

There has been some idle talk that the HP rating of the 170 might get bumped up to 115, but in two years that has not happened. It makes sense that the rating could be higher if you look at the rating calculation and plug in the length and width etc, but the manufactor is allowed to pick a lower rating than the rating calculation comes up with for a given boat size.

Interesting question since it mentions the first appearance of the new mid-range Optimax 90-HP engine on a 170 MONTAUK, but all this really needs to move to the POST-CLASSIC FORUM.

Meet you all over there.
